The Business Development & Marketing Manager works collaboratively within the Global Industry, Client Team Program and Product Business Development & Marketing teams to develop and execute on key initiatives and business plan objectives. The role supports the Palo Alto and San Francisco offices (a.k.a. Northern California), Global Technology Industry Group, assigned client team(s) and projects as assigned. The BD&M Manager will manages day-to-day responsibilities to ensure that assignments and projects are effectively managed and in alignment with the firm’s overall strategic efforts, and that our client service is exceptional.
Regional Responsibilities:
Develops and supports annual marketing and business development business plans for the Northern California offices and assigned industry group and client team(s) focused on priorities outlined by firm leaders and/or assigned teams, including thought leadership platforms, communications, and client outreach
Collaborates with business development & marketing department leadership and assigned industry and client team(s) and the Northern California office leaders to develop annual budgets to support initiatives outlined in business plan(s) or as outlined by leadership, including specifying key strategic and tactical objectives and means to achieve annual goals
Supports responses to RFPs, and pitch, presentation, and other opportunities via the development of written proposal and presentation materials for assigned industry group and client team(s), and liaise with the wider BD&M department, when relevant
Leverages existing internal resources (PR, BD, MarComms, Lateral Recruiting, Alumni Relations, and Diversity & Inclusion) to streamline our efforts and collectively raise the profile of our Northern California offices and practices
Collaborates with PR team and outside agencies to advance the profile raising efforts of our Northern California offices and practices including publicizing wins internally and externally; posting on social media platforms including LinkedIn; managing regional advertising campaigns; and educating our lawyers on how to be brand ambassadors
Collaborates with Alumni Relations to engage with alumni; identify potential referral sources; and support regional alumni events
Partners with BD&M colleagues to facilitate the completion of directory submissions; regional surveys; specific lawyer and practice awards and accolades; and other profile-raising initiatives on behalf of the Northern California office
Manages and directs marketing and business development client development programs for assigned industry group and client team(s) and the Northern California office
When relevant, provides support for seminars, sponsorships, and other events pursued by the firm in the Northern California office
Engages in research and analysis and competitive intelligence-gathering for strategic planning, competitive firm positioning, and business development activities for assigned industry group and client team(s) and the Northern California office
Supports recruiting and integration of lateral lawyers into firm via:
Preparation of targeted information for inclusion in lateral recruiting packet
Support integration of lateral lawyers into assigned department(s) and practice(s) via preparation of biographies and announcements, distribution of announcements, integration of contacts into firm’s CRM system
Collection and integration of experience for and into firm materials
Coordination with Communications team as to internal and external communications relating to the lawyer’s arrival
Manages continuous communications and interaction with departmental, practice, client team and industry group and Northern California office leadership, including responsibility for periodic meetings, reports, analysis, progress monitoring, etc.
Develops and maintains league table/industry survey content for assigned practices and respond to league table/industry surveys
Supports coordination of business development training for lawyers in assigned practice and the Northern California office
Periodically reviews and consults with lawyers regarding their bios and practice descriptions to ensure that they are kept current
Position may require travel.
Performs other duties as assigned or required to meet Firm goals and objectives
Education/Training/Certifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Research, Communications or related field, required
Advanced degree (e.g., a Master’s degree, a Ph.D., an M.B.A., or a J.D.) is preferred
Professional Experience:
- Minimum of six years of demonstrated success in a marketing, research, management, and/or communications-related field, either in the professional services (e.g., law, accounting, or consulting) or in a comparable position(s) in the corporate, trade association, or academic sectors, required
Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, required

Management Accountabilities:
Manages processes for direct reports in regards to performance appraisals, annual compensation, goal setting and performance counselling
Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience
Operational budget analysis and recommendations
Conducts analysis of staffing levels and participation in the recruitment process
Able to determine and implement change processes to improve workflow efficiencies
Process- and service-oriented with strong leadership and project management skills
Able to set priorities and delegate in an efficient manner
Physical Requirements:
May require occasional lifting of up to 20 lbs
Some travel required
The typical CA pay scale for this position is between, $149,000 and $166,000, although the actual wage or salary could be lower or higher if the candidate’s education, experience, skills and internal pay alignment are different from those specified below.
