Our Team: Technology Strategy & Business Development

The Tech Strategy & Business Development (TSBD) team is an internal consulting team within the Technology organization. The team focuses on projects in areas such as Strategy/Management Consulting, Platform Strategy, and Mergers & Acquisition Advisory. The team has also been tasked with leading a function focused on external engagement with leading technology partners to ensure American Express remains at the forefront of innovation.

The Technology M&A Strategy team within TSBD supports Amex’s growth and profitability through M&A transactions by collaborating across technology teams, business units, functional teams, and target companies to design and deliver comprehensive technical solutions while monitoring and mitigating risk. The teams leads end-to-end management of the product/ platform assessments, and people/tools integrations throughout the M&A lifecycle

The role: Director, Technology M&A Strategy

As a Director on the Technology M&A Strategy team, you will:

  • Drive cross functional technical and non-technical collaborations to develop comprehensive Technology M&A integration / separation strategy and roadmap

  • Lead end to end Technology M&A integration / separation activities from due diligence to post-merger integration

  • Partner with and coordinate across technology teams (i.e. Enterprise Architecture, Information Security, Infrastructure, Systems and Engineering etc.) to conduct platform and technical capacity assessment

  • Lead and coordinate evaluation of the technical aspects of potential deals, identify and mitigate technology risks, and ensure alignment with business strategies

  • Lead capability modeling and support build/buy/partner/reuse analysis

  • Monitors and communicates the progress of the Technology M&A plan delivery and ensures timely and effective communication of the status in terms of cost, forecast, schedule and assessment of risks/issues

  • Negotiates and influences cross-functional teams to ensure appropriate resourcing levels are engaged and maintained throughout the execution of the Technology M&A plan

  • Pro-actively anticipates risks and issues and ensures that appropriate mitigation planning is in place to avoid compromising delivery and seamless integration

  • Lead or contributes to continual Tech M&A process improvement or re-engineering activities

  • Influence others, often without direct authority, persuading with compelling data, facts, and conclusions.

  • Help build an awesome culture through team building and colleague engagement activities

Qualifications

  • 8 years of experience in planning and execution of Technology M&A integrations and separations

  • In depth experience in technology product/platform and people/tools integration activities

  • Thorough understanding and experience in managing end to end Tech M&A lifecycle, including Due Diligence process, Strategy & Planning phase and post-merger integration processes, ability to resolve challenges to ensure a seamless transition

  • Familiarity with one or more core Technology functions in a strategic capacity (i.e. Infrastructure and Cloud Strategy, Enterprise/Business Architecture, Resiliency/Cyber Security Strategy etc.)

  • Proven leadership experience to build strong relationships with senior stakeholders, providing strategic advice and communicating complex M&A / technical concepts in an accessible and executive manner

  • Proficiency in developing excellent quality presentations and communication materials for an executive audience

  • Must be a strong leader and proven ability to lead and develop a high-performing team

  • High degree of strategic and analytical capability, including the ability to perform data driven analysis, synthesize key points, implications and make recommendations

  • Outstanding interpersonal, communication and influencing skills with the ability to work with partners across different functions, colleagues at all levels, and with partners

  • Exceptional skill in driving results against aggressive timelines, managing multiple priorities and executing flawlessly

  • Exceptional program management skills to lead end-to-end Tech M&A Program delivery

  • Ability to operate in ambiguity, white space, and evolving priorities.

Preferred:

  • 10 years in technology in the payment processing, credit card or financial services

  • Prior experience in managing the integration of multiple M&A deals within payments sector

  • In depth knowledge of AXP businesses and/or technology functions is a plus.

  • Experience working with large scale cloud platforms, network or digital workplace

Qualifications

Salary Range: $145,000.00 to $230,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
