The University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Per Diem Ophthalmic Technician 1 with Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. This position is in our Palm Beach Gardens facility.
The core responsibilities of the role are the following:
Prepares exam rooms for daily clinical activities.
Monitors and maintains the appropriate levels of minor equipment, dry goods, and pharmaceuticals in clinic.
Tests patient's far acuity, near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
Examines eye for abnormalities. Applies drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
Measures intraocular pressure of eyes.
Tests patient's field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and charts test results on graph paper.
Measures axial length of eye using ultrasound equipment.
Performs other related tests and measurements.
Administers placement of hard and soft contact lenses.
Documents patients’ histories and gives instructions to patients concerning eye care.
Performs technical workups and special testing.
Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or equivalent
Certification and Licensing:
COA Certification preferred
Experience:
Minimum 2 years of relevant experience
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:
Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.
Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.
Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.
Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

Proficiency in computer software (i.e. Microsoft Office).
Department Specific Functions
The Ophthalmic Technician I tasks include but are not limited to performing the following procedures on patients of all ages:
Elicitation and recording of all elements of history that are required by external authorities and/or department regulations
Visual acuity measurement with:
Digital visual acuity system or projector chart E-card Near point cards Hand motion techniques, including directionality Light perception with and without projection Pinhole Brightness Acuity Tester (BAT) Interferometry
Measurement of the optical characteristics of spectacle lenses with the manual lensometer and/or auto lensometer
Retinoscopy
Keratometry: traditional, auto, and photokeratoscopy
Refraction: Using phropter, auto refracter, cycloplegic, and trial frame at distance and near
Amsler grid assessment
Confrontation visual fields
Pupillary evaluation
Biomicroscopy: General examination and Von Herrick chamber angle estimation
Ocular surface dysfunction assessment:
Tear break-up time (TBUT)
Schirmer testing
Fluoreseein and rose bengal stein pattern
- Applanation tonometry:
Goldmann
Tonopen
ICare
Insertion and removal of hard and soft contact lenses
Administration of diagnostic pharmaceutical agents
Humphrey Visual Field testing
Color vision screening
Inventory management e.g. supply ordering
Organizing rooms for daily clinical activities
Performance of blood pressure check whenever needed
