UL, LLC Building Envelope Technical Lead in Ottawa, Ontario

UL specialize in a wide range of building envelope advisory services including technical assessments and construction commissioning services, including new construction commissioning (BECx), performing building condition assessments (BCA’s), reserve fund studies (RFS), building envelope investigations, field reviews and thermal analysis to provide design and repair solutions as well as project manage and contract administration. Our services provide building owners and managers with comprehensive information on the condition of the building envelope, future performance expectations and solutions to maintain acceptable performance for an extended service life. Offering our services from Ottawa and Toronto offices.

As a Building Envelope Technical Lead, you will effectively manage the day-to-day activities of team, supporting and guiding decisions on projects and management within a highly matrixed organization. Undertaking business development and promotional activities with new and existing clients in the pursuit of new projects including client outreach and preparing proposal and fee estimates. Assisting Business or Engineering Manager in defining goals and performance objectives and metrics to execute strategy, with a focus on financial goals and profitability (revenue, profit, enterprise value, etc.). Maintain the responsibilities of a Staff Engineer and will handle projects. Providing continues technical support to the team and client. Check availability of resources and evaluation of possible alternative solutions by delegating work to appropriate levels for completion. Drives a high performing team by managing the performance, development, and engagement of team members. This role is responsible for building relationships with customers and supporting the commercial team by ensuring workload balance and providing technical support to satisfy customers and adhere to UL Mission.

  • Implement and execute capacity and capability management under the guidance of the Engineering Manager. Ensure effective workflow by engaging with cross functional leads and customers to understand scope of projects and technical needs to assign resources effectively. You will be responsible for driving process improvements to ensure financial results are achieved. You will support local members of a team and may also support remote employees in other locations.

  • Drive a high performing team by managing the performance and development of team members. Operate effectively in the UL matrix to actively support and drive high performance culture changes, transformation efforts and people engagement. You and your team will be accountable for results and will assist the Engineering Manager in defining goals, performance objectives and metrics to execute strategy. Develop and coach by providing, training, career counseling, feedback, guidance to drive high performance and morale. Ensure understanding of and compliance with all established policies and requirements.

  • Increase customer loyalty, anticipate customer needs and provide proactive solutions. Gather, share and respond to customer feedback. Coach and mentor employees to do the same. Support sales by building relationships with customers, maintain a deep understanding of what is in pipeline, obtain feedback on how UL can do better, what is working well and identify actions and solutions.

  • Provide direct support to customers and team by providing technical guidance and engineering judgment to complete projects and address all issues arising needing resolution (i.e. customer complaints, unusual requests, technical advice). Ensure quality and adherence to policies and standard requirements.

  • Lead and/or participate in discussions to drive business initiatives through brainstorming discussions. Empower and hold team accountable to find new opportunities to effectively drive growth & financial goals (revenue, profit, enterprise value, etc.).

  • Establish appropriate project programs. Support and guide project handlers to ensure compliance with requirements, changes in project scope or specifications and customer notifications. Explain UL family of companies’ policies, procedures and requirements, negotiates completion dates, and ensures an effective experience with the UL family of companies. You will handle projects and/or act as lead reviewer to support workflow and demand.

  • Communicate and exemplify UL’s Vision and Mission. Lead, promote and embrace change. Collaborate and build trust within the organization and with customers to meet or exceed their expectations. Develop strong, flexible cross-functional networks and global relationships to promote becoming the fastest, highest quality and most customer-friendly organization.   • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and follow all physical and digital security practices.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Building Science, Architectural Science, or Engineering Technology.

  • P. Eng. designation is considered an asset.

  • Must have a minimum of 20 years progressive experience with a proven track record of delivering complex and sophisticated Building Envelope projects.

  • Knowledgeable of local market conditions, emerging trends and opportunities.

  • Proven record of building relationships and developing networks.

  • Extensive knowledge of new construction is an asset.

  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills.
