Xcel Energy Substation Field Engineer Intern in Osseo, Minnesota

Position Summary

Work with the Engineering staff to support Substation Filed Engineering (SFE) projects, both capital and maintenance. SFE team initiates smaller fast track substation equipment replacement projects in response of failures, bad test results and any other emerging issues at substations.

The intern will work as an entry level engineering supporting the team lead or in initiating these projects in making sure project is moving in required progress, ordering material, and making sure drawing work is progressing accordingly.

Through practical field experience and mentoring, successful candidate will gain significant professional confidence in substation engineering, equipment, and people skills. This will be a summer opportunity with the potential to extend into a school semester. The candidate should be able to work full-time during the summer and 10-20 hrs./wk. during a school semester.

This includes coordination and attendance at the Scoping Site Visit, Creating Project Estimate, Creating Scope of Work Document (SOW) using SFE SOW template, transmitting the scope of work document and communicating the status of the project to stakeholders, ordering major materials, making sure necessary resource is assigned to execute the project, review and approve construction drawings and support crew during construction. This also includes schedule coordination with Project controls, outage coordination, and follow-through project progress from creation to completion using SFE project classification Emergency project, Fast tracking project and Planned project.

This candidate will be supporting projects to replace multiple equipment that Substation Field Engineering (SFE) group has identified as at the end of their life, pending failure, or deemed failed due to investigation or test result at different substations in NSPM area. This program includes but not limited to replacement of Transformers, feeder breakers, circuit switchers, switches, CCVTs, PTs, Transformer Bushings and Arresters, Station Controls, Substation batteries, fences, yard works and so on.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited Electrical Engineering program.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally

  • Must be self- motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with other Engineers and filed techs preferred Sophomore or Junior status with 2.5 GPA or higher.

  • This will be a summer opportunity with the potential to extend into a school semester. The candidate should be able to work full-time during the summer and 10-20 hrs./wk. during a school semester.

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $20.70 per hour
