University of Maine System Child Care Assistant - Two Positions in Orono, Maine

The Children's Center has openings for two Child Care Assistants to perform tasks related to the provision of developmentally appropriate child care programs and activities, which includes attending to the emotional and physical needs of infants, toddlers, and/or preschoolers.

Openings are in the Infants Program (1), and the Infants & Toddlers Program (1). Schedule is Monday-Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. for both. These are full-time, 40 hours per week positions. Pay rate is $16.79 per hour.

Note: Child Care Assistants at the University of Maine are eligible for government-funded salary supplements in accordance with MRS Title 22, §3737. Continuance of the salary supplement is contingent upon continued funding from the State of Maine Early Childhood Education Workforce Supplement Program.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Attends to each child’s emotional and physical needs, implementing developmentally appropriate activities needed for attachment, clothing, communication, exercise, food, guidance, rest and toileting.

  • Assists in planning and evaluating child care curriculum and environment to ensure that it is visually appealing, intellectually stimulating, and child-centered - meeting the developmental needs of all children.

  • Communicates regularly with parents/guardians of enrolled children on issues such as progress, problems and opportunities.

  • Insures the constant oversight of the total group of children.

  • Maintains records, reports and/or information regarding childs attendance, behavior, development, interactions, illnesses, injuries, and other medical attention.

  • Maintains healthy and safe child care/work environment by implementing Children’s Center, University and State/Federal policies.

  • Oversees and supports student or temporary employees.

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).

  • Successful experience caring for children within a group infant-toddler child care environment.

  • Demonstrated communication skills and ability to work effectively as a team member.

  • Ability to safely lift and care for children aged 6 weeks to 6 years old.

  • Employee must earn Pediatric CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days of hire (training provided).
