Job Description:

The Mechanical Designer is part of a multi-disciplinary design team developing advanced laser range finders and laser designators for use in military airborne, maritime and ground vehicle applications.

A Lead, Engineering Services (Mechanical Design Eng) has responsibility for developing detail and assembly level models and drawings using SolidWorks to document all aspects of our Laser systems.

Secondary responsibilities are to meet with customers and BD to develop requirements and specifications for new and existing products. Develop and maintain technical connections and interactions with other L3Harris groups and provide support to the manufacturing organization.

Essential Functions:

  • Design specialized systems and components using Solidworks collaborating with R&D Team to generate 3D models, 2D Manufacturing Prints and bills of materials (BOM), PDM.

  • Working knowledge of machined part tolerance analysis and GD&T.

  • Be Productive, Creative and Efficient

  • Working knowledge of 2D AutoCad software.

  • Read, interpret and create technical drawings and computer-generated reports

  • Research, analyze, design and evaluate existing mechanical products and equipment,

  • Implement operating procedures and provide technical information about mechanical products

  • Follow project from concept through production

  • Work with other engineers, technicians, manufacturing and quality engineers in a team environment.

  • Interfaces with customers and suppliers in technical areas relating to projects and legacy products.

  • Occasional travel to customer and supplier sites, and other L3Harris locations as needed.

  • Responsible for ensuring that specified quality standards are met for all tasks completed.

  • Demonstrate ethical and professional behavior in accordance with company values.

  • Performs job duties in a manner that maintains compliance with environmental, health and safety regulations, policies and procedures

  • Work should be performed within set boundaries and with very little direct supervision.

  • Must be able to communicate effectively with a wide array of professional levels and functions. Follow strategic direction set by Program and functional leadership

  • Familiarity with basic machining knowledge and the ability to operate an NC mill is desirable but not required.

  • All other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 9 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 7 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 13 years of prior related experience.

  • Experience – 8+ years of electronics or optics packaging in the defense market.

  • 8+ years of mechanical design with 6 years of recent experience in SolidWorks

  • 6+ years experience writing technical documentation and developing analysis reports.

  • 6+ years working in the defense industry.

  • US Citizen with ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

    Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Willing and able to work extended hours including evenings and weekends when necessary to meet customer commitments.

  • Periodic travel up to 10% may be required

  • Proficient in MS Office

  • Must be able to communicate clearly (written and verbal) to technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Ability to work in a small organization with fast paced environment

  • Ability to work effectively with other design disciplines as well as manufacturing to create design solutions that address often-conflicting requirements.
