State of Utah - Jobs Journey Diesel Mechanic - Region Three in OREM, Utah

Do you have experience working on heavy equipment? The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is looking for mechanics who take charge and have a high standard of workmanship for our Journey Diesel Mechanic positions in the Region Three Mechanic Shop in Orem.

In this position,you will ensure that maintenance vehicles,such as snow plows,are functioning properly and most importantly- safely. While you will work in a shop environment,this position will also travel to different sites throughout the region to help maintain heavy duty trucks and equipment that are unable to be brought into the shop. Principal Duties As a Journey Diesel Mechanic,you will:

  • Perform mechanic duties including inspecting,diagnosing,adjusting,overhauling,and repairing UDOT equipment.
  • Inspect parts for wear,breaks,and defects.
  • Use diagnostic testing and calibrating equipment for repairs.
  • Perform cutting,brazing,and welding as needed.
  • Complete necessary paperwork to account for parts and labor.
  • Road test all equipment before and after repair.
  • Complete other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications The best candidate will fill the position at one of the following levels depending on qualifications:

  • Journey Diesel Mechanic,minimum $29.51 (this includes entry base hourly rate of $23.71 plus professional development pay $5.80 - see info below).
    • A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 60 days after hire with Department provided training.
    • A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 90 days after hire.
    • At least 4 years of directly related professional experience or substitution of directly related education for the experience on a year-for-year basis.
    • 24-hour availability and be available for overtime and varied work schedules.
    • Your own full set of mechanics tools (tool allowance will be provided).
  • Journey Auto Worker (underfill),hourly rate $26.96 [(this includes entry base hourly rate of $21.17 plus professional development pay $5.80 - see info below).]{.underline}
    • A valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or the ability to obtain one within 60 days after hire with Department provided training.
    • A State Inspection certificate or the ability to obtain one within 90 days after hire.
    • 24-hour availability and be available for overtime and varied work schedules.
    • Your own full set of mechanics tools (tool allowance will be provided).

Additional Professional Development Pay: New hires may receive additional compensation for 12 National Institute of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications as part of their bi-weekly paychecks. Currently,each ASE is worth approximately $38.66,equaling $463.98 for a total of 12 ASE's. This is equivalent to approximately an additional $5.80 an hour on a normal 40 hour work week/80 hour pay period.   Obtaining one ASE certification each month is an expectation of this job. The professional development pay for the certifications is subject to obtaining all 12 ASE's within the 12 month probationary period. If at the end of the probationary period the employee has not obtained all 12 ASE's the professional development pay will be reduced or discontinued. The dollar amount listed above is subject to change based on other legislative authorized increases. ASE pay may be discontinued for reasons such as failing performance evaluations,disciplinary action,budget restrictions,policy changes,etc.   Supplemental Information Here is some information you should be aware of:**

  • Registration with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a requirement for all CDL holder s. Selected candidates will be required to register and uthorize UDOT to conduct limited queries on their CDL for the duration of their employment in order to be considered for this role.   • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing and random drug and alcohol testing of employees after hire. A conditional offer of employment may be made pending drug test results.
  • *Physical Requirements: *Strenuous - The work requires considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing,lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds,crouching or crawling in restricted areas.
  • *Working Conditions: *Risks which require the use of special safety precautions and/or equipment,e.g.,working around operating machines,working with contagious diseases or chemicals,etc.
  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Director/Group Leader.
