Position Announcement

 

Utah Valley University is seeking a highly organized and collaborative Assistant Shop Supervisor to join the School of the Arts' Costume Shop. Under the direction of the Costume Manager, this role involves working closely with other employees to produce, maintain, and care for costumes used in various departmental productions. You will also supervise shop staff, ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of the costume shop. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a passion for theater and costume design, who thrives in a creative, team-oriented environment and is eager to contribute to the success of the arts at UVU.

 

Summary of Responsibilities

 

• Trains and supervises student employees and lab students in building and following patterns, constructing and altering costume pieces, and maintaining and organizing stock.

• Constructs and alters costumes in coordination with Cutter/Draper. Builds and/or alters patterns in order to construct costumes to fit specific performers.

• Attends and participates in fittings, rehearsals, and crew trainings as necessary for productions.

• Cleans and repairs costumes, restocks and maintains organization of costumes in stock, and completes routine maintenance on shop machines and equipment.

• Perform other job related duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Graduation from an accredited institution with an Associate's degree plus two years of related experience or any combination of education and/or experience totaling four years

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited institution with a Bachelor's degree in the subject matter or closely related area and two years of related experience or any combination of education and/or experience totaling six years.

 

Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities

 

• Knowledge of standard costume construction techniques

• Knowledge of standard alteration and patterning techniques

• Knowledge of costume history and historical clothing construction.

• Knowledge of a variety of fabric types and their features and applications

• Highly proficient in patterning, draping, and drafting for costumes

• Advanced skills in hand and machine sewing

• Skills in basic tailoring techniques

• Skills in costume stock organizing and maintenance

• Skills in teaching basic hand and machine sewing

• Experience working on and supervising a wardrobe crew

• Ability to supervise and communicate effectively with students and performers of varying levels of experience.

• Ability to manage time and complete multiple projects with varied deadlines

• Organization and problem-solving
