Purpose/Introduction

Chevron Phillips Chemical is seeking a Mechanical Reliability Engineer to join our team in Orange, Texas. This position provides mechanical engineering support to improve plant safety, environmental compliance, reliability, and production. Candidate will work closely with operations and maintenance teams as well as other engineering and plant personnel to improve performance of equipment by identifying, prioritizing, and resolving reliability issues. This position will involve the engineer in the technical details of both fixed and rotating equipment, with an emphasis on rotating equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Participation in key reliability focus studies to improve system reliability

  • Performance of in-depth investigations to properly identify and eliminate the root cause of incidents and equipment failures including site bad actors

  • Support capital projects as subject matter expert including code requirements

  • Support major unit turnaround scope development and oversight of assigned turnaround work activities

  • Provide specifications and recommend design modifications for rotating equipment such as reciprocating compressors, rotary and auger feeders, extrusion systems, centrifugal pumps, and compressors. Serve as subject matter expert from design and/or repair through installation and commissioning

  • Provide daily engineering field support on fixed and rotating equipment for continued safe operation of multiple production units

  • Manage and oversee projects and programs in support of Rotating Equipment reliability programs such as Criticality Ranking, Asset Strategy Management, Equipment Health Monitoring, and Failure Mode Effect Analysis

  • Identify failure mechanisms for fixed and rotating equipment and provide recommendations for corrective or preventative measures

  • Lead and participate in the site management of change process

  • Provide leadership and vision to continuous improvement and forecasting for the site rotating equipment reliability program

  • Provide mechanical engineering support to the fixed equipment team on an as needed basis

  • Understand and promote the concept of proactive safety and take personal responsibility to meet the overall goal of zero incidents

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering with at least 3 years of experience in chemical or refining industry

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of Rotating Equipment Industry Codes and Standards (API-610, API-617, API-618, API-682, API-686)

  • Demonstrated experience and understanding of various types of rotating equipment such as reciprocating compressors, rotary and auger feeders, extrusion systems, centrifugal pumps and compressors

  • Demonstrated knowledge of rotating equipment asset strategy best practices

  • Demonstrated knowledge of machinery bearing and seal designs including various seal flush plans

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with SAP and APM asset management software

  • Knowledge and understanding of Prognost NT and Visu software

  • Knowledge and understanding of machinery diagnostic tools such as vibration monitoring

  • Cat II vibration certification
