Kaiser Permanente Medical Radiation Physicist (Full-time Day shift in Ontario, CA) in Ontario, California

Job Summary:

Responsible for ensuring the provision of high-quality diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy treatments to patients in an environment that meets established standards for radiation safety for staff, physicians, patients and the general public and in a manner that meets the service expectations of each of these groups.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides surveys, reports and consultation related to radiation safety for applicable facilities and/or patients that meet the organizations and regulatory standards in a timely manner.

  • Develops and implements quality assurance and evaluation programs for applicable diagnostic imaging and/or radiation therapy equipment that ensure high quality images and radiation treatments and that meet regulatory requirements.

  • Monitors and reports quality assurance activities to ensure adherence to established QA policies and procedures.

  • Evaluates and reports the performance of this equipment in a timely manner and makes recommendations to improve quality.

  • Maintains up-to-date technical knowledge of new and developing technologies and regulatory issues to support clinical and administrative decision-makers.

  • Provides in-service training to staff and physicians, as necessary, to ensure high quality images and radiation treatments, a radiation-safe environment, and compliance with regulatory standards.

  • Communicates to staff, physicians and patients in a manner that is precise, understandable, timely, constructive, and proactive and demonstrates excellent listening skills.

  • Maintains working relationships that are professional, collaborative, team-oriented, responsive, thorough, cordial and that demonstrate flexibility, innovation, a broad view of issues, acceptance of full responsibility for assignments, and a solutions orientation.

  • Services specific to Radiation Oncology:

  • Performing calibration of all radiation therapy equipment, and Linear Accelerator commissioning.

  • Implement LDR Brachytherapy Treatments for patients.

  • Treatment planning including High Dose Rate Brachytherapy, Stereotactic Radiosurgery, IMRT, IGRT, 3-D Conformal for patient treatment.

  • Implement and carry out Radiation Therapy Quality Assurance Program.

  • Provides effective and comprehensive instruction in medical radiation physics to radiation oncology residents sufficient to pass the physics portion of the ABR certification exam.

  • Note: Due to Kaiser internal policies and/or regulatory requirements, non-certified individuals cannot be permitted to perform certain tasks and/or produce reports independently without the oversight by and the cosigning of a certified physicist.

Basic Qualifications:

Experience

  • Diagnostic Medical Physicist:

  • Minimum two (2) years of postgraduate degree experience in Diagnostic Medical Physics subspecialty.

  • Experience in evaluating performance of diagnostic imaging systems.

  • Experience in evaluating radiation safety status of machine and radioactive materials sources of ionizing radiation.

  • Experience in designing, implementing, and monitoring quality assurance programs in diagnostic imaging.

  • Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist:

  • Minimum five (5) years of post-graduate clinical experience in radiation oncology (masters degree)

  • Minimum two (2) years of post-graduate experience in radiation oncology (PhD)

  • Experience in designing, implementing and monitoring Radiation Therapy quality assurance programs to ensure both patient safety and high-quality treatment delivery.

  • Experience performing calibration of all radiation therapy equipment.

  • Brachytherapy experience

  • Treatment planning experience and QA for 3-D conformal, IMRT, IGRT

  • Experience commissioning linear accelerators.

  • Experience with high dose rate delivery systems and stereotactic radiosurgery systems including planning and treatment.

  • Experience in designing, implementing, and monitoring quality assurance programs.

Education

  • Diagnostic Medical Physicist:

  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in medical physics or a related field (degree requirements waived if candidate meets certification requirements.)

  • Radiation Oncology Medical Physicist:

  • Master's degree in medical physics OR PhD in medical physics.

License, Certification, Registration

  • Therapeutic Medical Physics Certificate (ABR) from American Board of Radiology OR Diagnostic Medical Physics Certificate (ABR) from American Board of Radiology

Additional Requirements:

  • Additional General Requirements:Condition for Employment: Complete certification by the ABR in the applicable sub-specialty by the end of the 4th complete calendar year following their initial start date as an MRP. Failure to attain certification in the allotted time will result in termination of employment. A physicist's manager can extend this period by up to 12 months in special circumstances.

  • Must maintain their certification in the applicable sub-specialty with the ABR. Failure to do so will result in termination of employment. A physicist's manager can waive this requirement under special circumstances for a period of up to 12 months if the physicist is making acceptable progress on the requirements for renewal of their certification.

  • Incumbent medical radiation physicists, who have not already met the requirements above, will be required to complete this requirement by December 31, 2019 (4 calendar years).

  • General knowledge of medical radiation physics, medical radiation safety and pertinent regulations.

  • General knowledge of computers and their applications in diagnostic imaging.

  • Good communication skills, demonstrated customer service skills and willingness to be part of a team.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diagnostic Medical Physicist: Qualified to perform mammography surveys under MQSA - ABR certification in diagnostic radiological physics.

  • Experience teaching Diagnostic Radiology residents Radiation Therapy Physicist certification in therapeutic radiological physics.

  • Experience teaching Radiation Oncology residents
