City of Oneonta Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator / Trainee in ONEONTA, New York
Operates pumps, motors, compressors and related plant equipment and machinery; Performs permit sampling on influent and effluent, records results and informs supervisor of adverse results; Performs a variety of laboratory tests and other analyses including testing for pH, Total Phosphorus, Settleable Solids, chlorine levels, and temperature; Performs a variety of custodial duties relative to the maintenance of the plant grounds. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the principles and practices involved in operating and maintaining Wastewater Treatment Plant; good knowledge of the materials, equipment and chemicals involved in operating and maintaining Wastewater Treatment Plant; good knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations applicable to Wastewater Treatment Plant; good knowledge of laboratory principles and practices, equipment, materials and chemicals as they relate to wastewater treatment testing; working knowledge of the tools, materials, equipment and terminology used in maintenance and repair of wastewater treatment systems; working knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment and materials involved in operating and maintaining a wastewater collection system; working knowledge of the physical and biological sciences as they relate to water purification and wastewater treatment; skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves and related mechanical and electrical equipment; ability to analyze and organize data and prepare records and reports; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude. ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Grade 4 Plant whose designated capacity from 2.5 to 10.0 million gallons per day: Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State high school equivalency diploma; Completion of an appropriate course of instruction approved by the Commissioner, Department of Environmental Conservation and not less than one (1) year of satisfactory experience in the actual operation of an activated sludge Wastewater Treatment Plant with a point score of 56 or greater, and the ability to perform necessary tests. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid NYS Driver's License at time of appointment and must be maintained for the duration of employment. Possession of a current NYSDEC Grade 1 Operator Certification or higher at time of appointment and must be maintained for the duration of employment. WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT OPERATOR TRAINEE This is a trainee position in the competitive class for which candidates are selected on the basis of general intelligence, basic knowledge of elementary chemistry and general science and mechanical aptitude. Term of appointment is limited to one (1) year, during which time employees should be required to satisfactorily complete the training and experience requirements of the New York State Sanitary Code for a certificate appropriate to the plant. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Undergoes on-the-job training to become qualified as an operator of a wastewater treatment plant; assists in the operation and maintenance of a sewage treatment plant; does related work as required. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is a trainee position involving responsibility for learning the duties and routines in the operation and maintenance of a sewage wastewater treatment plant. The work is performed under immediate supervision of a qualified operator.
