A Brief Overview

Performs duties under the direct supervision of a staff pharmacist, and within the scope of practice as defined by policies and procedures and the State of Nebraska. Aseptically prepares and labels parenteral medications and sterile products. Orders, receives and stocks supplies and pharmaceuticals to maintain inventory levels. Codes and authorizes invoices and requisitions. Coordinates returns and recalls. Records and maintains Pharmacy QA Records.

Essential Functions

  • Responsible for sterile compounding of injectable pharmaceuticals. • Aseptically prepares and labels sterile Subcutaneous, Intra Muscular and Parenteral Solutions/ Pharmaceuticals. • Ensures accurate and timely compounding of medications. • Accurately reviews and completes the necessary written documentation associated with preparing medications for patient use.

  • Responsible for maintaining appropriate stock volumes of pharmaceuticals within the pharmacy, including processing of appropriate paperwork and electronic files used in the ordering, receiving and pricing of medications.

  • Reviews and authorizes payment of invoices, ensuring proper coding, pricing and terms. • Communicates at least weekly with the Pharmacy Manager of weekly pharmaceutical charges/credits and the potential purchases of high-cost pharmaceuticals. • Evaluates product purchasing selections based on current contract pricing, ensuring proper pricing and terms. • Communicates with the Pharmacy Manager the potential purchases of high-cost pharmaceuticals.

  • Perform a variety of functions related to the role of the Pharmacy Technician purchaser • Reviews charges/credits of medications when appropriate, monitoring potential price increases as necessary • Communicates with the Pharmacy Team, including Manager, regarding pharmaceutical shortages, changes in products, deleted products and pricing updates. • Coordinates pharmaceutical returns and medication recalls, optimizing credit whenever possible. • Responsible for recording and tracking pharmacy quality assurance (QA) measures.

  • Assists in filing Pharmacy Paperwork in patient medical records.

  • Assists in answering Pharmacy Phone and answering questions if within their scope otherwise forwarding to a Pharmacist. • Answers inquiries and telephone calls appropriately, assesses each situation and takes appropriate action with utmost attention to accurate communication. • Maintains positive, professional, relationships with all referral sources, third party payors, patients, physicians, families, caregivers, staff, other healthcare providers and interdisciplinary team members. • Promotes and provides excellent customer service to all internal and external customers.

  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.

Education Qualifications

  • High School Diploma Required or

  • G.E.D Required

Experience Qualifications

  • 1-3 years experience working in a Home Healthcare, Pharmacy, or Healthcare setting Required and

  • 1-3 years experience in preparing parenteral medications including two years experience in purchasing pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical supplies Preferred and

  • Previous experience in home infusion services Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Mathematical skills necessary for algebraic conversions, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Ability to communicate successfully both orally and in writing, including effective listening skills.

  • Bilingual skills preferred.

  • Basic skill level in computer software including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

Licenses and Certifications

  • PHRMTECH-R - Registered Pharmacy Technician within 30 Days Required and

  • PHAR-C - Certified Pharmacy Tech Preferred
