Duties

About the Position:

The Deputy State Fire Marshal (DSFM) in this position is responsible for: 1. The development and implementation of statewide public education programs that support the statutory mandates of the Fire Protection Bureau (FPB), Education, Enforcement, and Analytics Section and overall public safety in the State of Washington. 

  • Develop and maintenance of programs in support of educating the public, the fire service, law enforcement, and specific industries on the safe use of fireworks through the development and upkeep of the Fireworks Safety and Education campaigns.
  • Update and maintain a Statewide Risk Assessment (SRA), analyzing fire agency data to determine risks, impacts and needs for educational programs.  Evaluate needs of vulnerable populations and develop appropriate programs to address needs pertaining to fire and life safety.  Develop, support, and implement education and risk reduction programs based on the strategic targets identified in the SRA. 
  • Educate the public on the effectiveness of residential fire sprinklers, the leading cause of fires and fire fatalities, smoke alarms, fire safe cigarette initiatives, and restrictions on the sales of novelty lighters and other statewide fire prevention and safety initiatives. 

     2. Development and release of the annual Fire in Washington report.

  • Report should contain:

    • Statewide fire fatality data.
    • National Fire Incident Reporting System incidents as reported by local fire agencies with emphasis on fire incident data.
    • Fireworks caused injuries and fires data.
    • Bureau achievements and work performed by the Divisions and Sections. 
  • Work directly with staff in the FPB to obtain the data necessary to prepare the annual report. 
  • Develops the graphs, charts and informational material explaining the data presented, as needed.
  • Integrate qualified data trends and methods.
  • Format the report with graphs and charts, and add appropriate pictures and other information to describe the data presented.  
  1. Serving as the FPB Public Information Officer (PIO) coordinating, organizing, and presenting information at various media events throughout the year.  
  • Develop press releases on a regular basis to educate and inform others about fire-related topics. 
  • Produce a quarterly newsletter for the State Fire Marshal's Office. 
  • Be a critical thinker regarding the target audience of press releases, newsletter, educational materials, and reports.
