Title- Computer Aided Design (CAD) Drafter Classification- Engineering Aide 4 Job Status- Full-Time -- Permanent Number of Vacancies- Two (2) WDFW Program- Capital Asset ManagementProgram (CAMP) *Duty Station- Olympia, Washington -- Thurston County Hybrid/Telework- While this position offers a hybrid work arrangement, the successful candidate must be available to report to the Olympia, WA headquarters as needed.

*In this senior level role, provide advanced drafting and design support for complex engineering projects, utilizing professional knowledge of construction standards and innovative CAD techniques. *

*Envision yourself assisting engineers in the design of major projects by completing CAD drawings and details from surveys, design sketches and existing drawings.  *

Additionally play a key role in preparing topographical maps and comprehensive construction plans to support major infrastructure projects.

What to Expect- Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Computer Aided Design (CAD) Drafter will, 

Drafting:

  • Prepare original drawings of a complex nature encompassing multiple disciplines, moving or motorized parts, 3-dimensional drawings, utilizing CAD programs. 
  • Independently make design decisions and specify material components such as piping materials or construction materials.
  • Responsible for site layout and design functionality and constructability from drawings.
  • Prepare complete architectural, civil, electrical, mechanical, and structural drawings including site plans, profiles, mechanical and/or electrical schedules, welding plans, and structural details.
  • Prepare details and plans from existing drawings.
  • Draft complex finished maps and site plans, which include topography, grading plans, stormwater and erosion control plans.
  • Calculate and plot graphs, profiles, and other statistical, mathematical or engineering-type graphic illustrations

Under the direction of a Professional Engineer, conduct Architectural, Civil, Mechanical, Structural, and Hydraulic Design:

  • Prepare calculations and complex designs for review and use in drafting or by other employees.  
  • Understand design principles of critical systems and structures to ensure proper implementation and desired outcomes.
  • Compute yardages and other earth moving quantities.
  • Assists with the computation of construction costs:
    • Compute water quantity requirements, water velocity, head loss, weir heights, and friction losses in water supply systems.
    • Design, detail, and estimate costs of such systems and their component parts.
    • Design simple to complex buildings and size structural steel and wooden members.  

Drafting Review, Training, and Instruction:

Review permit and project plans produced by engineering aides for completeness and compliance of Division Drafting Standards.

Direct other Engineering Aides in the interpretation and use of:

  • Design Calculations.
  • Drawing and drawing procedures.

Train direct reports in the establishment and usage of templates, updated design standards, and newest technology options.

Mentors engineering aide 2 and 3 in more complicated design development and CAD tools.
