Overview

Responsible for performing a variety of electrical trade functions such as the installation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of equipment for the generation, distribution, or utilization of high voltage electric energy. Maintains electrical systems and components of electrical power distribution and generating equipment. Performs operations and maintenance duties to maintain power to telecommunications equipment and maintains the facility’s physical electrical distribution system in good repair.

Major Job Activities:

  • Installation, maintenance, or repair of equipment for the generation, distribution, or utilization of high voltage electric energy.

  • Installing or repairing any of a variety of electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, conduit systems, or other transmission equipment.

  • Work from blueprints, drawings, layouts, or other specifications.

  • Locate and diagnose trouble in the electrical system or equipment.

  • Work standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment and use a variety of electrician's hand tools and measuring and testing instruments.

  • Inspect, maintain, and repair high voltage(primary) and low voltage (secondary) power distribution systems, substations, transformers, circuit breakers, switches, fused disconnects insulators, grounding systems, power poles, above and below ground systems, security, and street lighting.

  • Diagnose trouble in the electrical system or equipment, working standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment, using a variety of electrician's hand tools and measuring and testing instruments.

    Material and Equipment Directly Used:

    General hand tools, power tools, specialty tools, measurement/evaluation tools, meters and other measurement devices, and safety equipment. This work may also require the use of a computer, scanner, copier, printer, phone, fax machine and various other equipment.

    Working Environment:

    Working conditions may include performing job requirements under time and resource constraints, in a very fluid environment. Work involves everyday risks or discomforts typically associated with libraries, offices, hangars and warehouses, and meeting and training rooms. May perform work in conditions of inclement weather, extreme heat and cold, high/low humidity, blowing dirt and dust, and work in confined spaces and at heights. May be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noise. Personal Protection Equipment may be required to include a face mask that covers the nose and mouth. Specific contractual requirements regarding education and experience prevail where applicable.

    Physical Activities:

    Work will require lifting up to 50 lbs, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents. Employee use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is required in certain areas, such PPE includes, but is not limited to head, foot, hand, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.

Qualifications

Education / Certifications:

  • High school education or equivalent.

  • Accredited professional trade school or successful completion of apprenticeship program.

  • Possess a State Journeyman Electrician card.

  • U.S. citizenship is required.

  • Active Secret Clearance.

    Experience:

  • At least 5–7 years’ work experience in the electrical wiring industry, to include planning, lying out, and installing electrical distribution systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC); experience must have been under the direct supervision of a qualifying electrician or a licensed electrical contractor.

  • Electrical work experience shall include electrical installation in commercial and industrial categories and must include work with High Voltage systems.
