Amentum Hazardous Waste Technician in Okinawa, Japan

Amentum is currently seeking a Hazardous Waste Technician for the Hazardous Materials Minimization Center (HMMC) Okinawa. HMMC provides hazardous materials and hazardous waste support services to the USMC and tenant customers located on Okinawa. The hourly pay for this position will be $16.25 per hour with an additional 15% Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). COLA is paid on a bi-weekly basis.

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

A Hazardous Waste Technician collects, receives, handles, transports, processes, packages and prepares hazardous material and hazardous waste for storage and shipment. Work is performed in a warehouse setting and involves in handling hazardous materials and waste that may be flammable, caustic, toxic and/or explosive.

Shift work, weekends, mandatory overtime (with proper notice given) and cross-training may be required in order to meet daily/weekly workload requirements.

Relocation costs will not be reimbursed or provided.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND R ESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Processes hazardous waste, but not limited to, inventorying, inspecting, receiving, and picking/staging.

  2. Inspects and verifies hazardous waste for proper labeling, marking, containerization, and storage.

  3. Retrieves hazardous waste from customer accumulation points.

  4. Manifests and documents generator, weight, waste stream, etc.

  5. Ensures waste streams are properly segregated prior to transport.

  6. Ensures hazardous waste containers returned to the Hazardous Waste Storage Area (HWSA) does not have mixed hazardous waste streams, is properly identified with pickup origin, waste information, dates, categories, and type of waste.

  7. Processes hazardous waste returned from customer Hazardous Waste Accumulation Point (HWAP), includes aerosol can punching, purging and recycling fire extinguishers, emptying and draining oil containers, sorts light bulbs, sorts of batteries by type.

  8. Prepares hazardous waste containers for closeout by the hazardous waste supervisor.

  9. Marks, labels, verifies contents, and container details/numbers, weight and dates.

  10. Conducts monthly random sampling, annual wall-to-wall inventories in accordance with warehouse procedures and as directed by the supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Note: US citizenship is required for facility credentials/authorization at this work location.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.

  • High school graduate or General Education Diploma (GED). Post high school training or experience in hazardous material/waste handling and safety procedures preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience with hazardous waste disposal operations.

  • Two (2) years' experience working in a hazardous material or hazardous waste operations.

  • Must possess a valid driver’s license or have the ability to obtain one with 30 days of start date.

  • Ability to successfully complete related training mandated by the company and state or federal law within 30 days of starting.

  • Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.

PREFERRED QUALIFICIATIONS:

  • Hazardous Waste Operations (HAZWOPER) certified within the past year preferred.

  • Forklift experience preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DEMANDS:

Typical office environment with frequent visits to the hazardous waste storage area, occasional lifting up to 50 pounds, constant sitting while using the computer terminal, constant use of sight abilities while reviewing documents, constant use of speech/hearing abilities for communication, constant mental alertness, must possess planning/organizing skills, and must be able to work under deadlines.
