THE POSITION: The Department of Transportation is currently on the lookout for a skilled individual to take on the role of a Transportation Construction Inspector. In this position, you will be responsible for carrying out a range of technical tasks related to inspecting materials and workmanship on highway construction projects within the Engineering District. DESCRIPTION OF WORK:

As part of this position, you will be responsible for conducting independent inspections of construction and bridge projects to ensure compliance with regulations and standards. You will promptly report any issues or concerns to your supervisor for further action. Your work will be reviewed by your supervisor to assess the effectiveness of your inspections. Additionally, you will be involved in inspecting various stages of transportation construction work, including checking grades, elevations, structure stake-out, and roadway stake-out in collaboration with contractors and surveyors. Furthermore, you will be responsible for inspecting the proper placement of materials such as cement concrete, bituminous concrete, drainage materials, and other relevant materials. Lastly, you will also be required to perform compaction testing using visual non-movement methods on sub-surface strata, soils, aggregates, and other related materials.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Vendor Controlled Schedule
  • Work Project Location could be Multi County within District 1-0 (Erie, Crawford, Mercer, Forest, Venango and Warren). Headquarters is Oil City, Pennsylvania.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time ad hoc during the winter season. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Oil City.
  • Salary:In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
  • One year as an Engineering Technician (commonwealth title); or
  • Two years as a Transportation Technician or Construction Cost Technician 1 (commonwealth titles); or
  • Three years of experience in highway or bridge surveying, design, construction, or inspection work; or
  • Three years of experience in quality control of materials or building or construction industry experience, which includes reading and interpreting blueprints, plans, or schematics; or
  • One year of construction inspection experience, and an associate's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, geotechnical engineering, surveying engineering technology, or a closely related engineering technology; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires possession of an active non-commercial Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License or equivalent.
