POSITION PURPOSE:

The Design Manager (DM) Principal manages projects and leads, coordinates, and integrates the activities of other DM's in the firm. They support execution of the firm's strategy and business plan as directed by the President. The DM Principal maintains a collaborative environment while facilitating formation of project teams, establishing resource requirements, building schedules, and guiding overall production and performance. They are the subject matter expert for project management and provide tools, processes, and procedures to ensure project success.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead design team(s) in the development of project documents by providing overall direction, coordinating with clients and external stakeholders, and internal team members and subcontractors.

  • Oversee production of design deliverables for Design-Bid-Build (DBB) projects (full plans, specifications, design analysis), design-build RFPs documents, engineering studies, feasibility reports and other engineering requirements.

  • Work with sister construction companies to maintain and improve existing Design-Build (DB) programs. Oversee and maintain design profitability balance within the Inter-company Work Order (IWO) process.

  • Work with DM's and North Wind cost estimators in maintaining a balanced approach to the development of design fees within the DB projects.

  • Oversee construction phase services as required by the project scope of work. This typically includes services performed in office environment such as coordinating responses to RFIs, shop drawing reviews, and construction modification documents.

  • Assess project requirements and develop and execute sound project management approaches to meet the needs of the client. Work with discipline leads to assign appropriate staff to meet project needs.

  • Develop project price proposals in coordination with discipline and design leads to meet financial objectives. Support negotiations with the client to match the project scope to the required level of effort.

  • Facilitate the creation of communication plans, ensuring that appropriate information is exchanged among key stakeholders, and conduct status review meetings among project team members and clients through project execution.

  • Determine, monitor, and review internal costs, operational budgets, schedules and staffing requirements for project teams

  • Work with corporate Project Controls and Accounting staff to review monthly project cost performance reports, unbilled project reports, and revenue projections. Take appropriate actions with project teams to correct issues identified.

  • Implement and ensure adherence to the LBYD Quality Program to provide high-quality project documents to clients. Manage and enhance quality by providing ideas and guidance to the design management team aimed at improving the effectiveness of their role and project delivery in general while concurrently working with the NW quality dept.to better LBYDF overall.

  • Develop, track, and report integrated, programmatic performance measures including cost, quality, schedule, and client satisfaction.

  • Develop and maintain an integrated production schedule to be briefed to the President weekly. Take appropriate actions with project teams to ensure critical milestones are maintained.

  • Mentor and train team members in project management methods, processes, and procedures. Maintain and update company polices and procedures as they relate to Design Management.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience:

  • 15+ years of experience in project management in Architect-Engineer firm(s).

  • Professional Engineer Registration (P.E.) or Registered Architect (RA).

  • Experience managing design and construction of modern, efficient buildings and facilities.

  • Strong working knowledge of design and construction, building systems/components and technology, Federal design criteria (e.g., DoD Unified Facilities Criteria), contract management, project delivery methods, team- building and client relationship building.

  • Demonstrated design and project management experience with Federal government and DoD clients.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong written and verbal communication and organizational skills.

  • Strong analytical skills, including data collection, trend analysis, and predictive analytics.

  • Strong financial skills, including budgeting, labor & expense management, and subcontract management.

  • Strong client-facing and business development acumen.

  • Ability to create a productive and collaborative environment across the firm.

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance is required.

Special Requirements:

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • LEED AP Certification considered a plus.

  • PMP Certification considered a plus.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Periodic visits to construction sites required and may involve wearing appropriate PPE, climbing ladders/stairs, and lifting small items (<30 pounds).

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

  • Work may be performed in North Wind offices or remotely.

  • Periodic travel is required.
