Kaiser Permanente Disability Management Consultant II in Oakland, California

Job Summary:

This individual contributor, serves as the primary contact for employees seeking reasonable accommodation through the Interactive Process. Influences the development and deployment of disability management strategies, programs, policies and procedures. Performs Disability Management activities under the guidance of more senior Disability Consultants. Independently administers the Northern California Return to Work Program. Consults with management to influence compliance with local, state and federal disability laws, KP policies and CBAs. Interfaces with managers, employees, legal counsel, and union representatives as part of end-to-end case management.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Influences management compliance with federal, state, and local disability laws, policies, CBA provisions.

  • Builds effective case strategies to mitigate risk by analyzing individual case fact patterns, policies and applicable laws.

  • Responsible for facilitation of the interactive process as required by ADA/FEHA, resulting in the offer of reasonable accommodations as appropriate.

  • Consults with department managers, claims administrators, legal, union representatives, Human Resource peers, employees, and leadership through the course of managing the disability case.

  • Consults with department managers and employees regarding medical leaves, industrial leaves, maternity leaves and related labor contract/bargaining agreement provisions

  • Provides a centralized, strategic focus to reduce employee lost time due to medical or industrial leave.

  • Coordinates with supervisors and department managers to ensure prompt and accurate reporting of workers compensation claims to support timely reporting and appropriate benefit payments

  • Manages an assigned caseload of employee disability cases.

  • Maintains case documentation to be utilized to defend discrimination charges.

  • Makes recommendations to move cases to the Alternate Job Search process or to termination of employment as appropriate.

    Basic Qualifications:

    Experience

  • One of the following required:

  • One (1) year labor relations experience.

  • One (1) year experience as an HR generalist or working across multiple HR disciplines.

  • One (1) year human resources consulting experience.

  • One (1) year health care experience.

  • One (1) year organizational development experience

    Education

  • Bachelors Degree in Business, Health Care Administration, Human Resources Management, Public Health, or closely related field OR four (4) years experience in directly related field.

  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) required.

    Additional Requirements:

  • Demonstrated experience managing cases involving the interactive process.

  • Demonstrated through work experience content expert knowledge of state and federal disability laws to include: ADA, FEHA, FMLA, CRFA, PDL and workers compensation.

  • Ability to consult regarding confidential and complex issues.

  • Must demonstrate excellent, effective written and verbal communication, consulting, interpersonal and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively create and facilitate collaboration amongst diverse groups, people and professional disciplines.

  • Must be able to work in a Labor/Management environment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience working with disability programs.

  • PHR or SHRM-CP Certification
