Responsibilities:

The Mechanical Designer is responsible for development of designs for Neutron Production Systems components, many of which are first of a kind or one of a kind. The Mechanical Designer produces high quality engineering design packages. The successful candidate will collect and maintain technical drawings, technical records and documents for technical systems. This role reports to the STS Neutron Production Systems Group Leader and interfaces with lead engineers, scientists and other designers across the project. The STS Mechanical Designer will be responsible for reviewing and checking the work of peer designers and draftsmen.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:As a Mechanical Engineer on the STS project, you will play a crucial role in the objective to build the world-leading high brightness Neutron Science Facility. You will have the opportunity to work with a diverse team of professionals and contribute to groundbreaking research in a variety of fields, including energy production and storage, medical advancements, and environmental studies. Other duties include:

  • Takes complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and build.

  • Successfully communicates and collaborates with engineers and scientists throughout the design process.

  • Creates engineering models and drawings using a computer-aided design (Creo and 3-D CAD) graphics workstation.

  • Produces multi-system installation drawings and specifications.

  • Prepares clear, complete, and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches and from written or verbal instructions.

  • Checks detail drawings to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards.

  • Works with the Document Control Center to help ensure accuracy and completeness of drawings.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • An associate’s degree in an engineering discipline. An equivalent combination of education and design experience may be considered instead of an AS degree.

  • 2+ years of experience in design of complex mechanical systems.

  • 2+ years’ experience using Creo/Pro-E. Extensive experience with other CAD packages may be considered in lieu of Creo/ProE experience.

  • Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards.

  • Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).

  • Ability to communicate design concepts through presentations to engineers and other designers.

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience designing mechanical systems in a radiation environment, remote handling or hot cell equipment.

  • Knowledge of weldment design and American Welding Society (AWS) symbology.

  • Experience with robotics systems, hydraulic/pneumatically actuated systems, electrically controlled systems.

  • Knowledge of radiation shielding designs.

  • Experience with CAD design of systems that are part of large facilities in an environment of 10’000s of components.

    Location/Work Arrangement:

    This position is located on site at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).
