Chenango County Public Health Sanitarian in Norwich, New York

Chenango County's Environmental Health Unit of the Public Health Department has an opening for a PUBLIC HEALTH SANITARIAN. This position involves responsibility for performing professional field work activities involving the investigation and inspection of non-engineering aspects of environmental control. An employee in this class applies the principles of the physical, biological and social sciences for the detection, evaluation, control and management of those factors in the environment which influence human health. A substantial amount of travel is required to fulfill the duties of the position. The position of Public Health Sanitarian differs from that of Public Health Technician in the greater complexity of work involved and the level of program responsibility. The incumbent receives general supervision from the Director of Environmental Health Services or a Senior Public Health Sanitarian. Employees in this class may provide technical assistance and guidance to Public Health Technicians. Inspects food service establishments, mobile home parks, water supplies, sewage disposal systems, bathing beaches and swimming pools, proprietary camp sites, solid waste facilities, and temporary residences to determine compliance with the New York State Sanitary Code and does other related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: EITHER: (A) Possession of a baccalaureate degree with 30 credit hours in the natural sciences, of which not more than twelve (12) credit hours may be in the applied sciences; OR (B) Must be employed as a Public Health Technician and possess five years of experience as a Public Health Technician deemed satisfactory by the local Commissioner of Health or Public Health Director and have satisfactorily completed a public health training course approved by the New York State Health Department. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: 1. At time of appointment and continuing throughout employment, a candidate/incumbent must possess a valid New York State Driver License, a reliable vehicle, and a driving record acceptable to the Countys insurance carrier. 2. Appointees qualifying under (A) above must satisfactorily complete a required public health training course approved by the New York State Health Department within two years of appointment if they have not previously satisfied this requirement. Minimum Qualifications and Special Requirement number 2 are pursuant to New York State Health Department Rules and Regulations 10 NYCRR Section 11.111.

The position has a 37.50 hour work week and starts at $25.81 per hour in 2024 and includes a generous benefits and leave benefits package.

A civil service examination will be required for permanent appointment at a later date. Position status: Competitive.
