Smith College Admissions Counselor in Northampton, Massachusetts

NORTHAMPTON - Admissions Counselor Entry level position, responsible for recruitment and evaluation of prospective students. This position supports any and all student diversity and access initiatives that may include Questbridge, Posse and general Community Based Organization partnerships; other duties as assigned by the dean of admission. Essential Functions Recruitment (40%): Plan and coordinate approximately six to eight weeks of travel annually to recruit students and manage an assigned geographic territory determined by application and enrollment data. Visit high schools, attend college fairs, conduct workshops, and meet with alumnae. Initiate and maintain effective communication between Smith College and college counselors from a diverse range of high schools. Manage correspondence and conversations with students, parents, counselors, community based organizations, and other constituencies. Present on-campus and/or virtual information sessions and participate in leading workshops during events for prospective and admitted students. Admission Reading and Selection (40%): Read, evaluate, and participate in admission committee work to decide on admissibility of approximately 1000 candidates for admission to the college in coordination with a team of colleagues under the direction of the Dean of Admission. Candidates may include first-years, transfers, Questbridge and Posse applicants. On Campus Programming and Teams (10%): Work with and support all on-campus programs as part of the Diversity and Access Team under the guidance and supervision of the Senior Associate Director of Admission/Diversity & Access. Represent the interests of recruiting and enrolling a diverse class on any assigned teams, including Questbridge. Professional Development (10%): Develop skills and connections and pursue professional development opportunities to better understand current issues and challenges in the field of admission and in Higher Education. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor\'s degree and/or combination of education and relevant experience. Individual must hold a valid driver\'s license and be able and willing to participate in both car and airplane travel. Experience working with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Preferred Qualifications: Previous experience in a higher education environment; fluency with a variety of computer software platforms; high comfort level with public speaking to large and small groups. Demonstrated interest in admission work and/or prior work or volunteer experience in an office of admission at a college or university preferred. Skills: The ability to effectively and efficiently develop and execute several key projects simultaneously. Must be able to work independently, have strong organizational and planning skills, and excellent writing and oral communication skills. The position requires strong analytical and computer expertise including familiarity with MS Office suite and a willingness to adapt quickly to technologies transforming admission work today. Excellent interpersonal skills, able to effectively interact with people of all backgrounds, and participate as part of a cohesive team working toward a shared mission. Ability to use sound judgment, creativity, and vision.
