Chisago SWCD Soil Health Specialist in North Branch, Minnesota

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT Employment Opportunity: Soil Health Specialist Job Summary: The employee will work across Chisago, Isanti, and Washington counties. The focus of this position will be to develop and implement soil health practices and serve as the lead staff for education programs that help farmers, crop advisors, and others adopt practices that improve water quality, enhance groundwater, expand habitat, and conserve soil resources. This position will actively facilitate positive landowner relationships with local partners in three counties to implement conservation planning, technical assistance, and cost share/incentive programs. Minimum Qualifications: A two-year degree in soil science, agronomy, or other agriculture related field; or any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position. Strong farming background, with an understanding of agricultural practices in our region. An understanding of basic agronomic and agricultural economic principles. Must possess and maintain a valid driver s license. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and capable of working with a wide variety of people. Must be physically able and willing to work in varied terrain and weather conditions, and capable of lifting 50 lbs. Applicants should be able to learn quickly, follow instructions, handle multiple projects, and adapt to changing job duties and/or responsibilities. Ability to work independently or as part of a team with multiple district staff and other government agencies and organizations. Ability to obtain USDA Job Approval Authority. Ability to obtain Crop Advisor certification within 5 years. Preferred Qualifications: Four years of demonstrated soil health experience. Four-year or advanced degree. USDA Job Approval Authority. Certified crop advisor. Location: Home office is located in North Branch (Chisago County), with regular office visits to Cambridge (Isanti County) and Oakdale (Washington County) Compensation: $65,000 $85,000. This position may be hired at a Technical or Specialist level depending on qualifications and experience. Status: Regular full time, non-exempt Benefits: Full benefits package. Application Deadline: 4:00 p.m. Friday May 24, 2024 Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Provide ongoing agronomic and conservation technical assistance to landowners with priority on minimum tillage, no-till, strip-till, cover crops, crop rotation, nutrient management, and other soil health related practices. Build strong working relationships with other agronomy professionals in the area. Increase program awareness through networking and partnership coordination and leading outreach efforts at farmer-facing events and workshops including public speaking. Increase farmer enrollment in conservation programs offered through partners. Provide communication recommendations to partners for reaching new farmers and providing visibility for success stories. Become knowledgeable and provide referrals to other conservation programs and opportunities to support individual farmer-driven goals. Participate and receive additional training to stay on the leading-edge of soil health strategies and practices. Maintain records of all work and track the status of each project. Provide timely updates to District Managers of the Chisago, Isanti, and Washington SWCDs. Work cooperatively with SWCD partners. Assist with training SWCD partner staff.
