Job Description

This position will provide technical expertise and skills to support undergraduate teaching laboratories, lecture demonstrations, and other support in the Department of Physics in the conduct of its educational program. The incumbent will be responsible for proper operation and maintenance of Physicians and Astronomy teaching laboratories including computers, projectors, associated digital interfaces and basic audio/video devices. This includes setup, assembling, testing, and repair of various lab and demonstration apparatus; equipment checkout, maintenance and inventory, and providing instructional support to faculty and Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs).

Working knowledge of general laboratory procedures and equipment to include testing and equipment, managing equipment inventory, setting up equipment, and performing various experiments and demonstrations. Working knowledge of personal computers to include Microsoft Office products to create reports, manipulate data, etc. Demonstrated strong skill in oral and written communication to include the ability to proofread documents and pay close attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to interpret and follow directions both oral and written. Demonstrated effective customer service skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently. Demonstrated ability to interact with diverse cultures and age groups.

Level and type of experience

Some experience working in a physics lab, astronomy lab, or related lab. Some experience working with computer applications such as word processing, databases, and spreadsheets.

Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)

Considerable knowledge of scientific principles, practices, procedures and techniques used in physics or a related science for demonstrations, teaching and research. Some experience in training others in lab experiments and procedures. Demonstrated ability to repair and maintain instruments and apparatus.

Conditions of Employment

This is a 20 hour per week commitment.

Hourly (wage) employees are restricted to working 29 hours per week on average or 1500 hours in total in the May 1 – April 30 period. This position does not have health insurance, retirement or leave.

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate Salary range between $ - 21 - $24 per hour
