Job Description

Responsible for effective supervision of assigned staff including training, performance management, employee relations, quality inspections, prioritizing and assigning work; develops and manages master schedules, site coverage and related activities. Assists with the development of goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and work standards for the security department; interprets and ensures that all Security Services policies and all other procedures and regulations are implemented and enforced, including compliance with DCJS regulations. Conducts personnel/hiring processes and selections.

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Working knowledge of security services including behavior observation techniques, principles, theories and practices, identification of hazards. Working knowledge of crisis intervention, and verbal and physical intervention skills. Working knowledge of common safety rules, regulations, procedures and practices Working knowledge of leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign work, schedule, supervise, train, and evaluate the work of assigned staff. Working knowledge of general office equipment and personal computers to include word processing, Excel, spreadsheets, and related security software. Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to evaluate the best method and then exercises the appropriate judgment in establishing priorities and resolving complex matters. Ability to perform basic mathematics.

Ability to establish and implement effective administrative programs and procedures. Ability to plan and organize daily work routine. Ability to performs a broad range of supervisory responsibilities over others.

Special licenses, registration or certification

Valid driver’s license and insurable record. Ability to obtain the DCJS CSO Campus Security Officer Certification within 180 days of employment.

Must successfully complete the required National Incident Management System ( NIMS ) Incident Command System Certifications within one year of employment.

Education or training

Current Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services ( DCJS ) certification as a Security Officer or an equivalent certification.

Level and type of experience

Considerable security experience. Considerable lead or supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Considerations (supplemental knowledge, skills, abilities, education, experience, licensure, certification)

CPP Certified Protection Professional) or APP (Associate Protection Professional) certifications. Considerable experience managing personnel, and security systems.

Management of security having multiple sites is preferred.

Current CPR certification/Automatic External Defibrillator ( AED )

Conditions of Employment

Successfully complete an extensive background investigation, and psychological testing. Must have CPR and First Aid certification within one year of hiring. Subject to random drug testing.

Must be able to work a rotating shift schedule which includes days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as needed. Some overtime required.

University Police Department employees are considered essential personnel for emergency conditions/inclement weather and expected to report to duty during these conditions.

This position is designated as sensitive. A Fingerprint-based criminal history check will be required of the final candidate.

Annual Salary/Hourly Rate Salary range between $ - 48,000 - 56,631
