EVMS Intern, Community Youth Advocate in Norfolk, Virginia
Under the supervision of the project director, the person filling this position will work with the project team in the Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Division of Community Health and Research, Department of Pediatrics. This individual must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to work with diverse populations; experience working with youth from under-served communities is a plus.
Recruit youth living in Norfolk public housing to participate in project activities.
Provide mentoring and STEM/healthcare-related career development opportunities to youth living in Norfolk public housing.
Facilitate life skills curriculum with youth living in Norfolk public housing.
Coordinate participatory action projects with youth living in Norfolk public housing.
Build relationships with community partners serving youth living in Norfolk public housing.
Conduct qualitative research via surveys, interviews, and focus groups.
Assist with data entry and management of survey data.
Attend program and staff meetings and training sessions as required.
Assist with the development of requested reports for team meetings.
Assist with the submission of papers and posters to conferences.
Assist with the development of manuscripts, grant proposals, and other written materials for submission to external sources for review.
Performs other duties as assigned
One (1) year of completed college coursework. Must be pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in a health or social and behavioral science field, such as public health or community health, from Hampton University or Norfolk State University. Experience working with youth from under-served communities is preferred. Working knowledge of the research process and the desire to increase research skills are a plus. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, word processing, and data base software and management.
Valid Driver’s license, provide a recent DMV report and have use of a vehicle in good working order with proof of insurance with a minimum limit of liability of $100,000 per accident as use of a personal vehicle will be required as part of this position. Copies of all documents must be provided to Human Resources, prior to any use of a personal vehicle for this position.
