Description

As a member of multidisciplinary team, the Early Childhood Special Educator provides a combination of developmental and educational services for developmentally delayed infants/toddlers and their parents.

Reports to the Education Program Coordinator, or designee.

May supervise student teachers/interns and early intervention paraprofessionals.

Must work a flexible schedule. Office space provided at Norfolk Infant & Toddler Connection Program site. A significant part of this position requires working in homes of families in various socioeconomic levels and in other community sites such as day care centers, private preschool programs, church facilities, and other locations where families are receiving early intervention services.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to sit for extended periods of time, utilize a computer, operate various office equipment: copier, printer, facsimile machine. Require frequent bending, sitting on the floor, and lifting up to 40 pounds.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

  1. Serves as a member of the inter-disciplinary team that conducts developmental assessments and works

with infants in the following activities in the home environment and in small groups at various Norfolk

sites: cognitive skills, social-emotional skills, language skills, gross and fine motor skills, and adaptive

skills.

  1. Has working knowledge of various screening and assessment tools that are used with children with disabilities age birth to three.

  2. Develops and implements objectives outlined in the Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) following the initial assessment.

  3. Documents developmentally appropriate instructional objectives and task analysis programming for young children with handicapping conditions.

  4. Maintains intensive child and family records and documentation in accordance with federal and other applicable guidelines.

  5. Reviews and updates child and family's goals and objectives as established in the IFSP on a regular basis.

  6. Schedules and provides educational activities in the home environment or other natural environment as

identified by the family, and in compliance with the IFSP.

  1. Coaches parents in various intervention strategies and works to engage the parent in active participation in home-based activities. Instructs and encourages parents to carry out IFSP objectives in the home and provide parents with information about child growth and development.

  2. Works closely with Service Coordinators and other early intervention services providers.

  3. Participates in child find activities, such as: health fairs, community screenings, etc.

  4. Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Education/Experience:

Bachelor's degree in special education or related educational field plus state licensure with an endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education from VA Board of Education. Experience working with developmentally delayed infants/toddlers. Endorsement in preK-3 is also acceptable.

Certificate/License:

Possession of a valid drivers license and acceptable driving record as reported by the Department of Motor Vehicles are required for persons using a personal or agency vehicle in the performance of their duties. Licensure with an endorsement in early childhood special education or preK-3 from the Virginia Board of Education.

CSB Staff roles: may include assisting other units at times to assist them with coverage needs, specialized

assistance, or to cross-train. Their category of employment is indicated below with YES or NO before the section

to indicate which section applies to them.

[Nol Staff hired into administrative positions (not direct service) can work in units other than their primary role to

provide administrative activities within their skill set, education, and training. They may not work in units as a

provider of direct services. They may serve in "voluntary" activities outside of the clinical service arena of the

CSB's core services working with the public for community outreach events, service fairs, homeless outreach

activities, homeless day shelters, neighborhood outreach events, trainings, etc. as long as their role is in an

assistance, trainer, or support function, not a clinical role.

IYes 1 Staff hired into direct service positions (direct service, monitoring direct service, supervising direct service) can work in units other than their primary role to provide administrative or direct service activities within their skill set, education, and training. They may also serve in "voluntary" activities outside of the CSB's core services working with the public for community outreach events, service fairs, homeless outreach activities, homeless day shelters, neighborhood outreach events, trainings, etc. in a direct service, clinical, or administrative role.
