The CSCP Organization is responsible for traditional supply chain functions such as Plan, Source, Make, Deliver, but also manages supportability (spares), decommissioning and disposition of Data center assets worldwide. We deliver the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform for external customers. Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 200 datacenters supporting services for more than 1 billion customers in over 90 countries worldwide.

Cloud Sourcing, Spares, Sustainability & Security (CS4) organization within CSCP manages sourcing and supply of IT hardware for the data centers. The CS4 PMO for Sustainability is at the center of the company’s strategy for Azure data center supply chain carbon and waste goals.  The CS4 PMO manages the centralized governance, framework and sustainability strategy aligned across various organizations in Azure Cloud aggregating toward annual targets and FY30/ FY50 roadmaps.

Responsibilities

Develop and manage initiatives to assess the sustainability impact of Microsoft’s cloud IT infrastructure, including conducting Life Cycle Assessments and other product impact evaluations such as product circularity

Build tradeoff & what-if scenario models assessing sustainability impacts of hardware design proposals

Support engineering efforts to build a scalable solution for sustainability impacts assessment across the cloud business, including providing recommendations and insights on tool development and procurement to enable more sustainable designs and decisions

Bring life cycle & hardware expertise to teams of data scientist and engineers, providing insights around complex environmental challenges and tradeoffs related to carbon accounting, embodied emissions, circularity, and other sustainability related impacts

Advocate and engage hardware engineering teams to drive product design changes that contribute to corporate sustainability strategy and goals

Support in the creation of a framework for measuring sustainability impact of hardware design, material, and supplier selection

Collaborate with sourcing, manufacturing and supply chain teams to work on supplier interventions programs reducing carbon emissions & waste.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Masters (PhD preferred) in Environmental Engineering or similar field

6+ years’ experience working in environmental product assessment, carbon accounting, life cycle assessments, environmental impact reporting, Program Management, Asset Management, Supply chain processes, Sustainability, Circular economy,

Expertise with life cycle assessment methods, modeling approaches, data, and applications like GaBi, SimaPro, Makersite and databases like Ecoinvent, IMEC or equivalent

Preferred Qualifications:

3+ years’ experience creating publications (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers).

3+ years’ experience conducting research as part of a research program

Strong understanding of the Information and Communication Technology sector, cloud hardware, and semiconductor supply chain.

Ability to evaluate environmental impacts of novel materials and technologies using limited and/or imperfect data, including quantification of uncertainties.

Deep understanding of product life cycles, including material science and flows, from sourcing to manufacturing to end-of-life recycling

Familiarity with environmental indicators and impacts, particularly with respect to carbon, water, energy, and resources

Comfortable navigating, transforming, and managing large and complex data and developing insight to support sustainability initiatives

Experience developing parameterized process-based models for engineering and/or manufacturing processes; knowledge of electronic component production (semiconductors, printed circuit boards, etc.), raw material production (aluminum, steel, plastics, etc.), mechanical part production (machining, stamping, injection molding, etc.) and/or industrial engineering is preferred

Demonstrable program management skills, including ability to direct multiple programs

Ability to work independently when required, and as part of a team
