The Naval Nuclear Laboratory, Spent Fuel Canister (SFC) Transportation groupis seeking a mechanical engineer to work on Research & Development of revised or new shipping methods for SFCs. This work will consist of performing finite element analysis (FEA) of SFCs, their baskets, and associated fuel; conducting analytical assessments of reactor servicing equipment; designing or modifying reactor servicing equipment; and conducting material and fundamentals testing to verify analyses.
The engineer will perform engineering evaluations and analyses, make engineering decisions for all aspects of assigned tasks, apply critical thought processes to identify and assess problems, develop solutions including teaming with designers to change hardware designs, clearly and concisely document the work, and prepare technical proposals that discuss and justify the recommendations. Cognizant areas may include planning, modeling, analyzing, designing, and testing of structural systems. Travel for this position is minimal.
BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of one year of relevant experience
BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of four years of relevant experience; or
MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of two years of relevant experience
Previous experience with Finite Element Analysis - static and/or dynamic.
