Bureau of Land Management Education Technician in Newport, Oregon

Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year. Responsibilities Education Technicians work at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area (YHONA), a 100-acre headland on the Oregon Coast. Significant resources include, Yaquina Head Lighthouse, Yaquina Head Marine Garden intertidal area, and marine mammals and seabirds They present to education groups and the public first person and third person costumed tours of Yaquina Head Lighthouse. They present to education groups and the public environmental education and interpretive programs, focusing on intertidal ecology, marine mammals, and natural history of the Pacific NW Coast. They conduct foot patrols of the park including climbing a 114-step stairway within the lighthouse, a 135-step stairway to access the Marine Garden and walking on the uneven and slippery algae covered rocks within the tidepools. Methods of engaging visitors may include outdoor labs, role playing of ecological concepts, and techniques of visual, literary, and preforming arts both on and off-site and in partnership with other agency specialists. Present interpretive and educational programs about resource stewardship skills at trailheads and parks to prevent resource damage or help solve resource management problems. May assist in conducting research using historic documents from primary sources including the National Archives and Records Administration, General Land Office, and Sothern Oregon University. Research is used to develop and present historic and natural science education and interpretive programs that match BLM mission/objectives with the state and national standards for science and history. They may also collect fees and issues federal recreation passes as a designated collections officer. The specialized experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (one year at the GS-5) of the position to be filled. Examples: Experience working in a park or historical setting, meeting with the public or school groups to provide information and conducting tours to explain the importance of the site's historical and/or natural heritage. Work in a gift shop, interpretive center, or other facility collecting fees. Taking part in living history performances or providing training to other staff and/or volunteers. Assisting with the development of and presenting interpretive and educational programs to school groups, the general public, or other organizations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands/Work Environments: Work is a mixture of indoor and outdoor. Indoor work involves long periods of sitting, standing and walking on concrete floors. Outdoor duties require moderate to heavy exertion, such as hiking over wet, slippery, muddy or uneven terrain. Weather conditions range from below freezing to 100+ degrees Fahrenheit temperatures. Summers can include extreme heat, dense fog, cold rain, high winds. Winters are harsh in areas, with severe snow, winds and rain. Most indoor work is climate controlled except in the lighthouse.
