The Role

Analyzes, researches, designs and interprets metallurgical fabrication processes and testing programs. Develops, analyzes, researches, and designs casting molds and casting production techniques, procedures, and applications. Provides technical guidance during casting production operations, including additions of different materials and modification of heat treatment plans to achieve specifications. Works with other engineering disciplines to test, analyze and determine root cause of defects and failures found in metal products. Prepares technical documentation including reports, specifications, procedures, and guides. Creates new or modifies current test methods, fabrication methods, techniques, and procedures in order to improve metal products based on metallurgical theories. Provides technical guidance to other engineering disciplines for the selection of metal alloys for specific applications to optimize strength, toughness, durability and corrosion resistance. Ability to obtain a DoD clearance.

Must Have

5 Years with Bachelors in Science; 3 Years with Masters; 0 Years with PhD.- Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The successful candidate should have experience in fabrication of metal products typically used in Shipbuilding or other heavy industry construction. Specific knowledge of high strength, low alloy steel fabrication techniques (casting, forging, rolling, hot forming) and other shipbuilding type metals (Ni, Cu alloys). Experience in failure analysis of metals and welds and demonstrated critical thinking is needed. Critical Skill - experience in metallurgical engineering, failure analysis
