The Role

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

This position is within the E14 Submarine Machinery Engineering Department at NNS and will be supporting overhaul and in-service repair of 688 Los Angeles Class Submarines as part of the Submarine Fleet Support (SFS) Team. Join a diverse team of Engineers and Engineering Technicians who make a living by solving unique and challenging problems.

The selected individual will provide technically sound engineering solutions encompassing a variety of Machinery systems including Weapon Systems, Steering & Diving, Propulsion Plant, Auxiliary Machinery, and HVAC. The individual will be expected to review product drawings, apply engineering principles, and interact with construction trades to resolve problems in a manner that meets 4 pillars of operational success: safety, quality, cost, and schedule.

Candidate will perform ship checks and should be comfortable with ladders and heights. Candidate should also be able to acquire a Secret Security Clearance.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

• Have a good understanding of mechanical engineering and design principles and how they apply to shipbuilding;

• Demonstrate a questioning attitude and mechanical aptitude;

• Demonstrate the ability to manage their work effectively;

• Have a general knowledge of Dimensional Control systems and practices.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master’s Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

• Demonstrates strong verbal communication skills

• Demonstrates strong technical writing skills

• Demonstrates technical rigor (accuracy, attention to detail, ability to cite requirements);

• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings (GD&T);

• Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team and work independently with general oversight.

• Experience with in-service Submarine work and construction is preferred.

• Excellent MS Office skills, including Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
