Our Regulated T&D business, led by Mark, is home to one hundred talented people ranging from our early career professionals to established engineers and project managers working across the UK electricity market to help keep the lights on!

Working in partnership with TNO’s and DNO’s we plan, design and deliver new customer connections as well as network reinforcements to ensure the infrastructure is ready for green investment and new technologies. Our bright sparks, spread across five key locations including Guildford, Stafford, Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle (with ambitions to have a presence in our Birmingham and Glasgow office) are encouraged and supported to realise their potential with training courses, further education and mentors for chartership.   • This role will involve the design of Distribution substations (11kV up to and including 132kV) across full project life cycle, from feasibility studies to detailed construction designs. The role is focused on primary plant but knowledge of secondary systems design will be an advantage.

  • Visit substations to establish the existing site layout, produce as-built drawings, assess project requirements, and then produce detailed design drawings for all aspects from 11kV switch rooms up to and including 132kV compound layouts

  • Attend site meetings and provide ongoing design drawings changes / support as required during project build.

  • The ability to design substations with CAD systems and use of document control system

  • Undertake the role of ‘Designer’ under the CDM regulations and production of a designers risk assessment for each project.

  • Review designs produced by Independent Connection Providers (ICP), Manufacturers and contractors.

  • Engineering support for Independent Connection Providers (ICP) and framework contracts.

  • On completion of projects, conduct a review and failures, non-conformance and preventable problems

  • Produce standard drawings.

  • Ensure that relevant Health and Safety risks and hazards are identified, made known to the project team and properly managed.

  • Ensure project design works are aligned with programme, quality, and margin.

  • Actively developing external and internal client relationships.

  • Experience of HV and EHV Plant specification, 11kV up to and including 132kV, design, load calculations and rating studies.

  • Proven experience in the design of both AIS & GIS substations up to and including 132kV

  • Knowledge of engineering standards for HV and EHV Plant, substations (Including earthing and electrical clearances)

  • An ability to interpret technical documentation relating to the design of electrical substations

  • An ability to understand and prepare primary plant design calculations including busbar force calculations essential for the design of AIS electrical substations

  • Ability to manage and prioritise work to ensure project timescales are met

  • An ability to work flexibly across a broad range of substation projects

  • Possess good problem solving skills and an ability to make decisions relating to the production of substation designs

  • Ability to make decisions and own the various design aspects of a project from beginning to end.

  • Excellent understanding of the H&S and CDM requirements and an ability to undertake the role of ‘Designer’ under the CDM regulations.
