Job Description

Our client is on a technology modernization journey and APIs are at the heart of it. They are building a team to enable an API transformation across the enterprise. A new API gateway is being built, enhancements to the API portal strategy are underway, and the evangelization and education of developers for an API-centric/design first environment has begun.

As a Vice President, Tech Lead for the API COE team within this organization, you will work with a product owner to lead the critical technology strategy for API Management at Prudential. Specifically, you will lead two teams of engineers, while contributing with hands-on engineering, to deliver on an API governance, standardization, and enterprise-usable API transformation program. You will also lead the implementation, management, and enhancements of the enterprises Developer Portal. You will partner with product owners, tech leads, and, most importantly, business application development teams to enable them on the Enterprise API platform. You will enable API best practices, engineer automated pipelines for building APIs while creating reusable, reliable, consistent, and scalable APIs for consumption across and outside of the enterprise.

They are looking for someone who has significant experience in the API space, specifically in transformation. Management of APIs within a space is beneficial, but theyre looking for someone who can lead the transformation of 3,700 APIs to enterprise APIs to a new API platform while following API standards and consistencies. Theyre looking for someone who has built APIs and hasnt only done the transformation. They have spoken with candidates who have done the strategy, but they also need someone to have the technical depth to build on the architecture of APIs.

The right candidate will have strong experience with authentication and authorization. The right candidate will have experience managing API gateways, API transformation, building and securing APIs with authentication and authorization, experience managing an API portal, cataloging of APIs, and consumption of APIs.

The API portal is built in Spring and Angular. Experience with any kind of JavaScript technology or server-side coding experience would be helpful.

Here is what you can expect in a typical day:

 Define, automate, and execute on API transformation inclusive of security, specification, and operability standards

 Partner with your product owner to establish key technical delivery plans, in alignment with a strategic roadmap

 Heavily influence product roadmap based on an understanding of the business and potential to simplify and reduce code duplication and improve the API strategy

 Provide technical expertise as it relates to API management, API platform infrastructure, and API development

 Work with application development teams to enable the API transformation; provide coaching on API best practices, review use cases, and assist with the migration to the new API platform

 Manage a team of engineers to build and manage a robust API management platform, API portal, and API center of enablement - as well as contribute hands-on in the development, testing, and operations of the API ecosystem

 Lead with an IaC and automation mindset, promoting frequent, small changes

 Identify opportunities for simplification in API development and platform management processes

 Work across the organization with key product owners and tech leads to establish and create consistency in the way the group enables self service capabilities to developers and consistent API design

 Maintain a consistent feedback loop with application development teams to champion adoption and continued improvements to the enterprise API strategy

Skills and Requirements

Strong experience with Kong (Apigee or another big API gateway tool is acceptable, but they really want this person to have experience with Kong)

 Significant experience with API strategy; domain-driven and specification-based design methodology, developer portals, REST best practices, API standardization and governance

 Significant API Architecture knowledge including REST, GraphQL, GRPC, Websockets, and Async API capabilities

 Experience building and managing API/Developer Portals

 Experience with API management strategies and API gateway technologies (Kong, Apigee, MuleSoft, Layer7, etc.)

 Experience in API design & tools; swaggerhub, stoplight, REST, GraphQL, GRPC, asyncAPI

 Experience with leading technology transformation in an enterprise setting

 Strong technical experience in

 Application Development, Automation, and Infrastructure as Code

 Java, Python, NodeJS, Go, etc.

 Angular, ReactJS, etc.
