Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Medical Service Assistant for NJMS- Infectious Disease Practice. The Medical Services Assistant (MSA) is to provide medical assistance to nurses and physicians in the overall care of patients, including technical procedures such as phlebotomy, and intramuscular and subcutaneous injections. The MSA functions under the direct supervision and authority of the physician when performing clinical tasks during patient care. Demonstrates competency in all skills related to the performance of patient care. Will also assist with receptionist, telephone, and filing duties. The individual displays responsible behaviors, communicates effectively to others and functions as a member of the healthcare team. Maintains an inventory of examination/procedure room supplies, assists in the organization of efficient patient flow, and organizes the clinic environment to assure patient safety. Demonstrates problem-solving skills as they relate to patient care activities, provides guidance for and acts as a role model for medical assistants in the clinical area.Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Under clinical supervision, performs delegated procedures common to the specialty area in a safe, effective, and efficient manner according to clinical practice policy and procedures. b. Performs telephone and in-person screenings.
  • Obtains and records patient's vital signs: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, weight, and height.
  • Reports screening findings to practitioner, and records on appropriate documentation forms in a timely manner.
  • Obtains additional data from patient and significant other based on initial data collection. Performs chart review prior to clinic visit to obtain historical data.
  • In close partnership with health care team, assures smooth and efficient patient flow and clinical operation.
  • Identifies self-learning needs related to job description and seeks out appropriate resources to meet learning needs. b. Acts as a resource and preceptor for Medical Assistants.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Graduation of a post-secondary medical assisting education program accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT), or any recognized certifying body approved by the Board.
  • Applicants may be licensed in the State of New Jersey in another classification permitted by regulations to give intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Must have attained a satisfactory level of comprehension and experience in the administration of intramuscular and subcutaneous injection techniques.

Certifications/Licenses
  • Credential Required: Current certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA), or registration from the American Medical Technologists (AMT), or the National Center for Competency Training (NCCT).
  • Primary Source Verification: NJ Division of Consumer Affairs

Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one (1) year of related experience in a medical office setting preferred.
  • NJDHSS HIV counselor certification strongly preferred.
  • Computer literacy with competence in Microsoft Office components required.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak clearly, write proficiently.
  • Knowledge of Newark community preferred.
  • Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) preferred.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to ten (10) pounds. Assists with transportation services in the clinic.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Office environment. Moderate noise. Occasional (less than 1/3 of time) exposure to blood-borne pathogens that requires use of personal protective equipment.
