About CELJ: The Center for Elder Law & Justice (CELJ) is a civil legal services organization fighting for justice, primarily for low-income older adults, in 10 counties in Western New York. Our attorneys stop illegal evictions, save clients homes from foreclosure, put a stop to elder domestic violence, fight for public benefits, work with our local immigrant & refugee populations, and represent grandparents and other kinship care relatives in custody and neglect petitions in family court. We also advocate system-wide policy changes, commenting frequently on changes to regulations and working with local elected leaders on legislation that will affect the poor and vulnerable older adults in our area. We believe that independence and dignity are the hallmarks of justice.
JOB SUMMARY: Reporting to the Managing Attorney, the Supervising Attorney of Elder Abuse in our Dunkirk office is responsible for supervising elder abuse cases, as well as staff in our Dunkirk office. The position can be based in Dunkirk, or Buffalo.
REPORTS TO: Managing Attorney
SUPERVISES: - Staff Attorney - Staff Paralegals - Social Workers
JOB DUTIES: * Provide supervision on all files through one-on-one staff interaction and weekly case review meetings. * Conduct annual reviews of staff * Represent the agency as needed at board meetings, board committee meetings, and community meetings * Handle a caseload, heavy on court appearances and administrative hearings * Represent consumers who have been victims of scams and/or predatory sales practices * Represent clients in family law matters, including kinship custody, guardianship, and adoption cases. * Provide trainings, community outreach, and education to individuals and local community-based organizations, and other advocates * Supervise Elder Abuse/Domestic Violence cases in surrounding counties: - Erie, Wyoming, Chautauqua, Allegany, Orleans, Cattaraugus, Niagara, and Genesee counties.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES: * Assist with outreach events * Work on special projects as needed * Travel required * Night/weekend availability required
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: * Admitted to practice in New York State for at least 5 years * Experience in consumer, kinship, elder abuse cases preferred * Knowledge of civil legal services required, CELJ specific experience preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: * Demonstrated leadership experience * Demonstrated excellence in organizational, managerial and communication skills * Analytical abilities and problem-solving skills * Experience in grant writing and reports * Excellent writing skills * Litigation experience * Ability to work independently
