The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training. The above hiring range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

Position Summary

The Sternberg Lab investigates evolutionary and biological links between CRISPR systems and transposable elements, with a dual focus on basic biological/biochemical investigation as well as applied studies to develop new genome engineering technologies. The Sternberg Lab presently comprises 5 postdoctoral scientists, 7 PhD students, 2 research technicians, and 2 undergraduates. The technician will work closely with members of the lab advancing new CRISPR- and transposon-based projects. The technician will be expected to participate and engage intellectually in the lab's research goals and to this end, will work closely with other colleagues in a highly motivated, collaborative environment.

Responsibilities

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Ordering labe supplies, receiving deliveries, and keeping critical inventories well-stocked and organize.
  • Maintaining the lab's buffer and media needs.
  • Performing assays and preparing solutions according to detailed protocols.
  • Designing and carrying out experiments related to the research goals of the lab.
  • Maintaining a detailed and up-to-date laboratory notebook.
  • Participating and engaging intellectually in the lab's research goals.
  • Working closely with other colleagues in a highly motivated, collaborative environment.
  • Anticipate one or more co-authored research publications to result from their time in the lab.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, chemistry, or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A commitment of one or more years is desired.
  • Applicant should have strong knowledge of chemistry, biology, and microbiology and must be proficient in working with E. coli (solid and liquid media culturing, plasmid transformation, etc.) and mammalian cells (tissue culture, plasmid transfection, etc.).
  • Applicant should have experience with molecular cloning (e.g., PCR, agarose gel electrophoresis, restriction digestion/ligation, and/or Gibson assembly) and excellent proficiency using micropipettes, running gels, setting up enzymatic reactions, and learning new techniques.
  • Applicant must have excellent organizational and communication skills and should be comfortable reading primary research articles in the CRISPR biology/technology space.
  • A successful candidate will be able to complete tasks in a timely manner, with attention to detail, and be able to multitask effectively.
  • Showing interest in engaging socially with the rest of the lab is a plus, and the applicant must be a team player and enjoy/excel working collaboratively in groups.
