Position Summary

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Student Research Worker to join our team in a temporary part-time position to work within the Division of Critical Care, Hospital and Palliative Medicine

The Department of Pediatrics at the Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University is a world leader in providing care for children. The Motelow Lab (Principal Investigator: Joshua E. Motelow, MD, PhD) is an innovative translational research hub for multi-omics and pediatric critical illness. We explore the intersection of known germline risk factors and unknown disease networks for children in the pediatric intensive care unit. In doing so, we aim to improve the health of the most vulnerable children in our health system. We seek a highly motivated scientific programmer to join our team.

Responsibilities

  • Implement bioinformatic software (nf-core, GATK, etc.).
  • Mine and analyze public multi-omic databases and datasets (dbGaP, SRA, etc.).
  • Leverage cloud-based tools for rapid, efficient, and large-scale deployments (AWS).
  • Performs related duties & responsibilities as assigned/requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Graduate or Equivalency required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in education and experience with focus on programming OR current undergraduate with demonstrated skills in programming.
  • Solid programming or scripting skills in Python or R.
  • Solid knowledge of algorithms and data structure.
  • Working knowledge of Git.
  • Experience with workflow languages such as WDL and nextflow.
  • Experience in AWS.
  • Experience in *NIX environments.
  • Strong understanding of software engineering concepts and the full software development cycle.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work effectively within a team using organizational and communication skills.
  • Willingness and initiative to seek out and learn novel tools, methods, and technologies within a quickly evolving field.
