Primary Responsibilities

The primary responsibility of the Stormwater Business Class Lead (the Lead) will be to provide in-house leadership and guidance as it relates to stormwater services as well as delivering projects for clients related to stormwater work and growing the external visibility of HDR's Stormwater Program. This role is responsible for supporting the overall vision and strategy of multiple offices. The Lead will function as a liaison and coordinator for staff across different sections and offices to deliver projects and proposals with innovation, applicable standards and relevant resumes included. The Lead will also be required to manage projects and provide production support on projects in addition to business development responsibilities. This role is responsible for identifying and executing, with teams of staff, the multiple HDR services needed by municipal and utility operated stormwater programs throughout New York and New Jersey as well as internal services including, but not limited to:

  • Study and design of stormwater management facilities
    • Site drainage
    • Storm sewers
    • Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI)
    • Best management practices (BMPs) for water quality treatment
    • Low Impact Development (LID)
  • Understanding of interior and coastal flood risks (compound flooding impacts in urban areas)
  • Applying hydrologic and stormwater/drainage modeling
  • Participating in capturing planning processes and/or driving business development opportunities
  • Helping local offices with recruiting, as needed
  • Identifying professional organizations and conferences for staff participation
  • Fostering relationships with local urban resiliency and stormwater clients and professionals
  • Organizing and disseminating industry best practices to project teams and sections of staff
  • Driving and participating in national Stormwater related initiatives
  • Leading comprehensive stormwater management and master planning, and/or watershed planning
  • Understanding state stormwater regulations and manuals
  • Applying asset management applications and tools

In this role, you will work closely with the project engineers to prepare both planning level and design level projects including drainage reports, and contract/bid documents; and work collaboratively with other design disciplines to provide integrated solutions and business development opportunities. This role reports to and works closely with the Local Water Business Group and the National Stormwater Business Class Director

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with green infrastructure design in New York City
  • PE in NY and/or NJ
  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Engineering, Civil Engineering, Hydraulics, Water Resources, or a related field.
  • 15+ years total professional experience
  • Experience in conceptual, preliminary and final design of drainage and stormwater projects, and development of construction documents
  • Experience with hydrology, hydraulic/drainage design and stormwater facility design software
  • Ability to function as a leader and an active team player in a diverse multidisciplinary environment
  • Experience giving presentations to clients and external and internal professionals
  • Experience with liaising and coordinating staff at all levels of experience
  • Experience with business development.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a Professional, Architecture, Engineering or closely related field
  • 10 years of experience
  • Committed to quality, improvement and HDR values
  • Maintains a professional or engineering registration and has related technical experience experienced in development and management of diverse teams
  • Works cooperatively with other area business class leaders, operations managers, technical directors and marketing managers on business class efforts
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions.
