Job Description

Times Opinion is looking for an ambitious, hard-working editor to work with our politics editor to help shape coverage. The Staff Editor will commission and edit Op-Eds as well as write occasionally themselves, gifted at presenting well-reasoned arguments and insightful observations to help shape debate on important public issues.

This editor will work with a talented team of editors and writers to create op-eds that are wide-ranging, smart and thorough, that wants to interrogate ideas, political platforms and accepted dogma.

We’re looking for a journalist that combines a strong point of view with intellectual curiosity, who is eager to persuade rather than simply provoke whether writing or editing. Impeccable editorial judgment, sharp news instincts and exacting standards for excellence are a must.

This editor must be collaborative, willing to work closely with other editors, writers and columnists across the Opinion department and solicit the most interesting perspectives and arguments from across the political spectrum. Collegiality and respect for different opinions are non-negotiable to this job. Responsibilities include:

  • Convening and driving debate from a wide range of voices about the biggest news and ideas

  • Editing op-eds and writing engaging display copy

  • Anticipating and reacting to the news with assignments to staff and non-staff writers

  • Regularly developing, pitching and helping execute high-impact enterprise pieces; including collaboration with multimedia teams, including design, photo, graphics, audio and video on how to best tell these stories

  • Cultivating and maintaining a network of contributing writers who will supply regular commentary — from once a month to once a week

  • Reading, reviewing, and promptly responding to unsolicited submissions

  • Working with the team to continually assess and calibrate Opinion’s politics coverage, considering news value, the range and diversity of writers; and the tension between productivity versus impact and influence

  • Coordinating with the audience team to maximize the reach and impact of the work

  • Willingness to work on weekends and evenings, as news cycle demands

Experience and Qualifications:

  • At least 7 years of experience in a digital or daily publication.

  • Experience writing and editing Opinion journalism preferred.

This is a Guild position which reports to the Politics Editor.
