The Hartford currently has an in-house opportunity for a Senior Trial Counsel to primarily litigate cases in the New York City counties of Bronx, New York, Richmond and Kings County. The Senior Trial Counsel is a highly skilled attorney with extensive experience in litigation and trial of complex Construction, Premises Liability, Products Liability and Commercial / Personal Motor Vehicle matters and other civil litigation matters / accidents involving serious injuries. This position also requires experience with the handling of risk transfer related issues involved in such cases.

As a Senior Trial Counsel for The Hartford, you will join a collaborative litigation environment. The ideal candidate is a well-seasoned attorney with significant trial experience who demonstrates an ability to independently handle cases of high complexity and high exposure. These cases will be handled from inception thru trial.

Key responsibilities include :

  • Handle complex and high exposure litigation.

  • Analyze intricate substantive and procedural legal and factual issues, conduct extensive, well-reasoned legal research, independently develop and present defense strategies on behalf of clients.

  • Retain and consult with experts including doctors, engineers, biomechanical engineers, life care planners, and economists.

  • Prepare complex pleadings, written discovery, motions and briefs in support of defense strategies without supervision because of level of experience and expertise.

  • Provide effective and timely communications, information, legal advice and other services to clients and claims customers on legal and factual issues in a technology driven environment.

  • Communicate with the court, witnesses, opposing counsel and co-counsel in a manner consistent with established office procedures.

  • Provide for the prompt, efficient and effective disposition of assigned cases.

  • Independently prepare and conduct depositions, trials, judicial and administrative hearings and alternative dispute resolutions.

  • Provide legal opinions to Managing Attorney, Assistant Managing Attorney, clients and Claims customers.

  • Provide timely and appropriate reporting to Claims in accordance with standard operating procedures.

  • Prepare presentations on legal topics for Claims customers and clients.

  • Attend continuing legal education seminars in order to maintain a high level of professional expertise.

    Qualifications :

  • Minimum of ten (10) years of legal experience in tort litigation in state and federal courts within the New York City area and surrounding counties.

  • Juris Doctorate Degree from accredited law school and license to practice in the State of New York.

  • Significant documented first chair jury trial experience.

  • Strong legal research, writing skills, and negotiation skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize responsibilities.

  • Strong communication, computer and technological skills and the ability to quickly leverage new software as required.

  • Demonstrated expertise and familiarity in the handling of claim cases and litigation.

  • Positive-minded and collaborative team-player attitude.

  • Solid MS Office proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook); Lexis Nexis experience.

This position is a remote work opportunity with the option to work in our New York City office.

The selected candidate will travel for appearances within New York City. Additional occasional travel might be required into Long Island.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$133,920 - $200,880
