Dow Jones Senior Software Engineer (Full Stack/Web) in NEW YORK, New York

Job Description:

This Senior Software Engineering position requires web development across our properties for desktop, tablet devices and mobile devices. Knowledge will be required around specific operating systems and related programming languages which in my team are Node.js, .NET, Javascript, HTML, CSS and React. Additionally, knowledge of Next.js, Vue.js and Github are also desirable. We use Linux for our server deployment and AWS but this is abstracted by our deployment tools so a limited knowledge is all that is required. Development is usually done on a Mac and hence our local environment setup is geared to this platform. An understanding of Web page performance and automated unit testing is expected as we desire a 70% test coverage on our web applications.You will:

  • Design, develop and test web applications for Dow Jones Ad Technology.

  • Work closely with designers, data scientists, product managers and other engineers to build innovative solutions to current and future advertising challenges.

  • Help set technical direction and long-term strategy for future web initiatives.

  • Play an active role in the product development process.

  • Keep an eye on technical innovations and changing trends in web technologies.

You are:

  • A web engineer with 3+ years of hands-on experience with HTML, CSS and Javascript/Node.js. Experience with React and Vue.js is a huge plus.

  • A creative thinker and problem solver, able to distill complex problems down to actionable items with simple solutions

  • Curious about and interested in contributing up and down the technology stack

  • Passionate about shaping a strong culture of engineering excellence

  • Excited about the future of the news industry and being a part of our evolution

Preferred Tools/Skills:

  • Terraform, CloudFormation or other infrastructure as code solution’s

  • Docker, Elastic Beanstalk or other cloud or container based application deployment

  • CSS knowledge - Grid, Flexbox, etc.

  • Experience with Webpack

  • Knowledge of ES6

  • Intermediate knowledge of modern browser technologies including web workers, service workers, etc

  • Strong understanding of web browsers and their debugging capabilities (Chrome/FF/Edge/Safari)

  • Knowledge of basic design and UX principles

NYC Pay Range: $40,000 - $160,000
