Senior Manager – Operational Risk Strategy & Transformation Initiatives

The Global Risk and Compliance (GRC) organization is American Express’ Independent Risk Management function. As American Express executes against its growth ambitions and commitment to customer excellence, it is imperative that we transform our Operational Risk Management framework to scale with a robust operating structure. The company is embarking on a multiyear transformation initiative, to elevate Operational Risk Management as a critical function across the enterprise and strengthening our control environment. The Chief Risk Officer and Chief Colleague Experience Officer of American Express are the co-executive sponsors of this effort. The Operational Risk Management Transformation team is a newly set up team within GRC which will be responsible for operational risk management transformation initiatives across the enterprise. The incumbent will be key in helping define and support the evolution and enhancement of our Operational Risk Management framework for the enterprise. This is a high visibility and unique opportunity that includes working with cross functional stakeholders across the enterprise including several senior and executive committee leaders on this pivotal initiative.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate across cross-functional stakeholders to help build and execute on a comprehensive project roadmap which sets the overall strategic direction for the operational risk initiatives as well as execution details and timelines.

  • The incumbent will be a thought leader with a proactive mindset - play a lead role in stakeholder alignment across workstreams, proactively assess risks and escalate or suggest mitigation strategies, identify dependencies, etc.

  • Assist in running a robust day to day program office - track status of milestones and deliverables across workstreams, run communication forums, impact assessment, resource requirement, stakeholder coordination, funding needs, prioritization, etc.

  • Execute on a robust communication plan to keep relevant stakeholders at different levels informed, obtain buy-in, receive inputs, and identify roadblocks as relevant.

  • Create materials for regular updates and present to senior stakeholders and executive committee.

  • Stakeholders that the incumbent will work with include - business unit product/ process owners, operational excellence teams, second line teams, Technology, GSG, staff groups, external consultants, etc., across levels.

Qualifications:

  • Self-starter with an ability to navigate successfully through ambiguity.

  • Ability and willingness to operate independently in a highly complex matrixed and fast-paced environment.

  • Strategic and tactical leadership skills, in addition to sound judgment and decision making.

  • Strong relationship building skills with ability to effectively collaborate and work across multiple business groups and functions to drive outcomes.

  • Strong communication skills and executive presence with ability to effectively communicate with senior stakeholders.

  • Ability to collect, analyze and synthesize complex and technical information and distill into “so what” messages.

  • Ideal candidate would possess project management experience.

  • Experience in driving transformational change.

  • Strong Microsoft Office skills required.

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Information Systems, Engineering, Finance or related field required; Master's degree a plus.

Qualifications

Salary Range: $90,000.00 to $165,000.00 annually bonus benefits
