The Search Relevance team parses billions of ads to surface the best ad to show to Amazon shoppers. The team strives to understand customer intent and identify relevant ads that enable them to discover new and alternate products. This also enables sellers on Amazon to showcase their products to customers, which may, at times, be buried deeper in the search results. By showing the right ads to customers at the right time, this team improves the shopper experience, increase advertiser ROI, and improves long-term monetization. This is a talented team of scientists and machine learning engineers working on complex solutions to understand the customer intent and present them with ads that are not only relevant to their actual shopping experience but also non-obtrusive. This area is of strategic importance to Amazon Retail and Marketplace business, driving long term growth.

As a Data Scientist on the team, you will:

  • Solve real-world customer problems by analyzing large amounts of data, diving deep to identify business insights and opportunities, design business and customer facing metrics, design experiments, developing statistical and ML models tailoring to business needs, and collaborating with Scientists, Engineers, BIE's, and Product Managers.

  • Write code (Python, R, Scala, SQL, etc.) to obtain, manipulate, and analyze data

  • Apply statistical and machine learning knowledge to specific business problems and data.

  • Build decision-making models and propose solution for the business problem you define.

  • Retrieve, synthesize, and present critical data in a format that is immediately useful to answering specific questions or improving system performance.

  • Analyze historical data to identify trends and support optimal decision making.

  • Formalize assumptions about how our systems are expected to work, create statistical definition of the outlier, and develop methods to systematically identify outliers. Work out why such examples are outliers and define if any actions needed.

  • Given anecdotes about anomalies or generate automatic scripts to define anomalies, deep dive to explain why they happen, and identify fixes.

  • Conduct written and verbal presentations to share insights to audiences of varying levels of technical sophistication.

Location: Candidate can be based out of Arlington, New York and Seattle.

Basic Qualifications

  • 5+ years of data querying languages (e.g. SQL), scripting languages (e.g. Python) or statistical/mathematical software (e.g. R, SAS, Matlab, etc.) experience

  • 5+ years of data scientist experience

  • Bachelor's degree

  • Experience with statistical models e.g. multinomial logistic regression

  • Experience in data applications using large scale distributed systems (e.g., EMR, Spark, Elasticsearch, Hadoop, Pig, and Hive)

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years of data visualization using AWS QuickSight, Tableau, R Shiny, etc. experience

  • Experience managing data pipelines

  • Experience as a leader and mentor on a data science team

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $143,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $247,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
