Overview

Join our dynamic Protective Relay Strategy Implementation (PRSI) team and play a pivotal role in revolutionizing Con Edison's Protection and Control (P&C) systems. Be at the forefront of the clean energy movement, working in a collaborative environment that values shared knowledge and innovative thinking.The Section Manager of P&C Standards will provide leadership, technical expertise, direction and supervision of resources for the development and maintenance of Standards for Relay Protection and Controls systems. Assures safety, quality, efficiency and compliance with regulations, codes, standards and company policies, procedures and specifications. Responsible for development, review, and maintenance of P&C Standard documents and procedures.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage the execution of standards development initiative that aligns with the vision of PRSI department.
  • Plan and direct activities to establish comprehensive standards packages for widely used relay applications within Con Edison transmission, sub-transmission and area stations. This includes creating relay philosophy documents, settings configuration templates, settings guidelines, calculation sheets, applicable drawings, test templates, relay part numbers, protection and control scope templates etc.
  • Serve as the administrative lead for the DOE Wide Area System Protection grant which includes coordination with subrecipients, oversight of government cost accounting, and coordination with Law, Supply Chain, and Accounting.
  • Ensure lessons learned from past events and/or industry are incorporated into the standard design to achieve operational excellence.
  • Study industry best practices and support technological advancements to enhance established standards and/or create new standards.
  • Perform various engineering analysis, evaluate new hardware/software solutions and support deployment of protection system upgrade programs.
  • Support PRSI department in implementing new strategies, initiatives and processes to advance the design, operation and reliability of P&C system.
  • Support activities within other sections of PRSI including protection system asset management and remote monitoring / analytics of substation protection and control devices.
  • Manage vendor performance including technical review and input to the contractors work.
  • Maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders to implement relay protection standards, solicit feedback and manage expectations.
  • Perform technical review on relay protection scope and ensure the design aligns with approved standards.
  • Demonstrate technical and analytical ability to solve problems associated with relay protection systems and recommend solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance on relay protection and control systems to direct reports within the section.
  • Present on various technical and safety related topics at organization and executive level.
  • Periodically be available off hours to consult with operating organizations on relay problems and resolve emergencies associated with relay protection systems.
  • Ensures that section personnel are adequately trained and qualified in their respective departmental areas of expertise in order to perform their assigned tasks.
  • Perform special projects and other related assignments as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and 8 years applicable work experience in the field of relay protection or power systems engineering. or
  • Master's Degree with a Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and 6 years applicable work experience in the field of relay protection or power systems engineering.
Relevant Work Experience
  • REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and 8 years total experience in any of the following areas: relay protection or power systems engineering. In lieu of this, a Bachelor's degree in electrical or mechanical engineering with a Master's degree in engineering and 6 years of applicable experience will be accepted.
  • Strong technical competence and practical experience with relay protection systems at transmission, sub-transmission, or distribution level.
  • Strong written, verbal, presentation communication skills, and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels and motivate employees.
  • Must have strong computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Required
  • Working knowledge of various microprocessor relay platforms, software, and IEC 61850 protocol. Preferred
  • Industry involvement with EPRI, NATF, IEEE and other organizations on P&C applications. Preferred

  • Driver's License Required
Additional Physical Demands
  • Must be able to respond to Company emergencies by performing a System Emergency Assignment to restore service to our customers.
  • Must be willing and able to travel throughout the Company service territory, as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to respond to emergencies 24/7 as required by system conditions.
  • Requires the ability to walk extensively, work at elevations, in confined spaces, in extreme heat, cold and noisy environments.
  • Must be willing and able to work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to wear PPE as required.
  • Must be willing and able to work in both an office environment and field locations.

Minimum Salary: 140000.00 Maximum Salary: 190000.00 Salary Unit: Yearly
