POSITION DETAILS

POSITION DESCRIPTION AND DUTIES:

The Office for the Advancement of Research (OAR) oversees all research operations at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (John Jay), a senior liberal arts college within the City University of New York (CUNY). John Jay has developed strong and multifaceted expertise in research in many areas related to its core mission, including: crime control, eyewitness testimony, forensic science, police training, prisoner reentry, the psychology of violent behavior, public health and justice, science education, and many other fields. In addition, as a liberal arts college, we have faculty involved in diverse areas of scholarship including the creative arts, humanities, and other spheres. Research operations have grown significantly in recent years and involve faculty, staff, graduate and undergraduate students. The goal of OAR is to support and stimulate faculty and staff to explore research projects, develop collaborations, and pursue external funding and research. The office also oversees research compliance activities, provides training, and supports the professionalization of research operations and events throughout the College.

Reporting to the Director of Research Compliance and Integrity within the OAR, the Research Compliance Specialist will serve as the HRPP Coordinator and provide administrative support across the different compliance areas including, but not limited to Human Research Protection Program (HRPP), Research Agreements, Export Controls, Conflicts of Interest (COI) and Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR). The Research Compliance Specialist will respond to compliance inquiries and provide support and training to researchers. The Research Compliance Specialist will work closely with researchers and CUNY staff to assure timely processing and record retention for HRPP, Research Agreements, Export Controls, Conflicts of Interest and Responsible Conduct of Research Training. The successful Research Compliance Specialist will be a detail-oriented with excellent customer-service skills.

The duties and responsibilities of this position will include, but not limited to:

  • Acts as a compliance resource for the research community and responds to questions and inquiries.

  • Under the supervision of the Director of Research Compliance, maintains research compliance files, reports and websites.

  • Serves as the first point of contact for CUNY faculty, staff and students who become involved with Human Subjects Research.

  • Reviews IRB Submissions to evaluate whether they require CUNY HRPP or IRB review and issues determinations.

  • Performs administrative pre-review of research submissions to ensure completeness and compliance with Federal regulations, and CUNY specific policies and procedures.

  • Reviews IRB applications submitted for category determination, assigns to reviewers and processes IRB determinations.

  • Updates and maintains up-to-date compliance training database and documentation.

  • Provides administrative support for office functions including but not limited to processing of Research Agreements, Export Control determinations, Conflicts of Interest determinations, etc.

  • Participates and assist in audits and investigations of various kinds, by fact-gathering, analysis, oversight and reporting.

  • Completes special projects and assignments as specified by the Director of Research Compliance and Integrity.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications, skills, and abilities:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree is preferred.

  • Knowledge of principles of ethical conduct of research with human subjects.

  • Knowledge of applicable federal regulations (OHRP, NIH, FDA, USDA, and other government agencies) related to human subjects research and compliance.

  • Advanced skills in MS Word and intermediate skills in database programs, including PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook.

  • At least four years of related professional experience. Prior IRB experience preferred.

  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.

  • Demonstrated administrative skills

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.

  • Excellent organizational skills, managing conflicting demands and priorities, without compromising quality.

  • Ability to work effectively and diplomatically with a broad range of researchers and other diverse individuals.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as well as independently.

  • Proven commitment to accuracy and thoroughness.

  • Ability to treat confidential information with utmost discretion.

Coordinates compliance activities related to College or Unit research programs.

  • Ensures that campus research programs comply with federal regulations, state laws, and CUNY policies and procedures

  • Provides administrative support to committees and review boards overseeing research compliance

  • Conducts outreach and education efforts to foster a culture of regulatory compliance

  • Organizes and manages technology applications used to facilitate compliance and reporting

  • Collects data and reports on compliance activities and outcomes

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
