Job Description

Hours: Full-Time – 35 Hours

The NYC Department of Design and Construction, Public Buildings Division, Architecture & Engineering-Engineering Unit seeks an Assistant Mechanical Engineer. Under general supervision, the duties for this position will include, but not be limited to project scoping, design and/or review of consultant drawings and specifications (utilizing Blue-Beam), site inspections, generating reports, ad hoc technical investigations; in-house design (utilizing AutoCAD and BIM) and providing support services for client-agency projects. Duties may also include reviewing and developing drawings, writing specifications and preparing estimates of quantities; checking shop drawings; performing mechanical engineering calculations, condition assessments, and feasibility reports; participating in inspection operations by observing, checking and certifying the installation of materials and equipment, reviewing or examining plans for the construction, demolition or alteration of structures to comply with the provisions of law, rule or regulation; and assisting with design work on basic plumbing, heating, ventilation and HVAC systems. The candidate will also interface with clients, consultants, contractors, and other technical staff. Some of the physical activities performed by Assistant Mechanical Engineers and environmental conditions experienced are walking to and from inspection sites and during inspections; climbing and descending ladders or stairs to get to areas to be inspected; standing for an extended period; bending and stooping during inspections; working in confined areas.

Qualifications

  1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in mechanical engineering work; or

  2. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and a Master's degree from an accredited college in mechanical engineering.
