JOB DESCRIPTION

Power Plant Mechanic-Mount Sinai Morningside

To maintain Power Plant machines and equipment in good working order. Is cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives and policies of the Department and the Hospital Center.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Repairs or rebuilds boilers, engines, the ecology machine system, or other related equipment.

  • Leads and works with Power Plant helpers in repair or maintenance procedures. Checks helpers work for correctness and adherence to schedule.

  • Evaluates operating status of machinery and equipment visually and by ear throughout shift.

  • Receives instructions and procedures for repair and cleaning from Watch Engineer or Power Plant Supervisor.

  • Changes and lubricates bearings. Repacks valves and pumps. Replaces gaskets, seals, etc. Aligns Pump/Motor, Turbine/Generator sets.

  • Cleans boilers, pumps, and other related equipment at direction and when required, chemically or manually.

  • Mixes and prepares cleaning solutions, evaluates cleaning requirements and mixes proper proportions of chemicals and liquids. Leads Power Plant helpers in cleaning boilers and other related equipment.

  • Advises Watch Engineer of equipment deficiencies, job requirements or complications, parts and tools needed.

  • Performs the duties and activities of Fireman and/or Ecology Operator as required.

  • Performs miscellaneous and/or emergency duties as required.

  • Operates emergency generators, as required.

  • Piping and fitting repairs, as required, including welding, soldering, burning, etc.

  • Overhauls pumps and compressors, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

Requirements:

  • High School Graduate or GED

  • Three years experience in Power Plant plus two years experience as Mechanic Helper.

  • Must be working towards a Welding and Burning Permit.

IUOE at Saint Luke's and West (Engineers), BHD - Engineering Facilities Management - STL, Mount Sinai St. Luke's

REQUIRED SKILLS

Microsoft Office Suite

Must be able to climb catwalks and ladders and be able to lift minimum of 50 pounds
