Job Description

The Vickovi Lab at the New York Genome Center, Columbia University's Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science and Columbia University's Herbert and Florence Irving Institute for Cancer Dynamics is looking for a motivated individual to work as an Associate Research Scientist I within a creative and dynamic research team of scientists and engineers. The Vickovi Lab is focused on developing novel "digital pathology" tools to track disease progression with the aim of identifying translatable drug and therapeutic targets in human tissue cohorts. The team leverages technologies including spatial transcriptomics, single-cell sequencing, and machine learning. A particular area of disease focus for the lab is developing tools for spatial genomics that will enable perturbing highly complex interactions in the human gut-to-brain axis.

We are looking for a motivated computational biologist to join our team, lead the development and application of new approaches in the field of single cell and spatial genomics and specifically those with experience and interest in multi-modal data integration including DNA chromatin conformation and imaging data. As a Postdoctoral Research Associate, you will be a critical member of a collaborative team with opportunities to contribute to innovative research projects. You will investigate and test new methods and technologies for project advancement, in order to understand the mechanisms of neuroimmunology, cancer immunology and aging, in an efficient and comprehensive manner, which will accelerate the advancement of clinical therapeutic hypotheses. The Vickovi Lab works closely with the Technology Innovation Lab; a leading biohub for molecular biology innovation located at NYGC.

Responsibilities may include:

Develop new computational, machine learning, and statistical analysis methods for integrating and analyzing large-scale, spatially resolved RNA-seq and genotypic data using current state of the art technologies;

Develop a resource for the community that gives access to collected data;

Work closely with experimental colleagues and cores to understand the nature of generated data;

Actively participate in the preparation of manuscripts for publication and present at scientific conferences;

Assist in peer- and student-mentorship; and

Share expertise and provide training and guidance to group members as needed.

Required Skills

Relevant PhD degree required, with a strong computational biology or computer science focus.

Extensive knowledge and experience of modern molecular biology and/or chemistry tools required, including next-generation sequencing methods; single-cell and spatial genomics.

A proven track record in computational methods development required;

Ability to work in an independent manner with minimal supervision but having a strong collaborative personality required;

Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work efficiently in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment required;

Strong research, problem solving, and communication skills (both written and oral) required, coupled with a strong attention to detail and scientific curiosity; and,

Excellent analytical and organizational skills required.

Mentoring Plan

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be expected to meet regularly with Dr. Vickovic at NYGC and Columbia University's Biomedical Engineering Department. This individual will also interact regularly with faculty at both institutions. The fellow will participate in regular group meetings at both NYGC and Columbia, and will participate in meetings of NYC-wide working groups.

About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's), and cancer.
